I'm not interested in highjacking the transfer window thread to explain to you why Michael Carrick is a good player - especially when PHB has already done so above.
11.50 Paper talk. The News of the World claims Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini is set to sign for Tottenham Hotspur today.

Would be a good signing imo. Cudicini dispite languishing on the Chelsea bench for years is a top quality keeper - probably close enough to top 5 in EPL imo.

Not rating Carrick as highly as some others do is one thing but arguing that Anderson is better than him is just plain incorrect..

The Daily Star is claiming today that Shay Given has agreed a move to Man City and there's lots of talk too that Steve Harper could be on his way to Spurs which would leave Newcastle without two senior keepers.

Newcastle are away to City next in the league so I wonder if anything will happen before then.

We have some excellent young Keepers in the ranks also, Tim Krul being one.

However, Shay and Steve are one of the last positives the fans can look to at this club. Loyal, proud to wear the black & black and white, and both top of their field. If sold, there really would be little left to keep the fans from lynching JFK, Wise, Ashley etc.

This transfer window should have been about us getting in the 4 or 5 players we desperately need to strengthen our beleaguered squad. Instead, it looks like it will be made up of a battle to keep hold of what little quality we do have, with maybe the odd dodgy loan coming in.

    :(

Sunderland have reportedly agreed a fee with Tottenham Hotpsur to secure the transfer of Pascal Chimbonda from the Stadium of Light to White Hart Lane.

The Black Cats have settled on a figure of £3 million as adequate compensation for the defender, around whom rumours of dissatisfaction and possible exits have circulated for a while.

Mad - I just don't understand what's going on at Spurs. 2 players released within the last year are returning? Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with Defoe and Chimbonda is a very good right-back, but we currently have Corluka playing there and I believe he's been our most consistent performer this season. I don't see the sense in this unless he's been brought in to play CH or perhaps to move Corluka to CH. Weird.

Cudicini is a great signing as back up to Gomes. For once we're doing good business.

Is he backup? Why move from backup at Chelsea to backup at Spurs?

Cudicini will be first choice, there's no doubt about it in my mind. He is one of the best keepers in the premiership (although he's getting a little old now)

Eh, one last payday before you retire?

Gomes has come on leaps and bounds since the errors he was making in Redknapp's early days, IMO he's been our best player. He's also 8 years younger than Cudicini and offers more going forward. That said, he's injured and we need experienced back up, so Carlo will probably get a few games and a chance to stake a claim to the GK spot.

Fair enough but he's probably on less now. Maybe a nice signing on fee since he signed for free.

Cudicini will undoubtedly be first choice - he's a superb goalie and much much better than Gomes.

West Ham break their record fee signing Savio Nsereko. Who?

West Ham have landed Brescia striker Savio Nsereko and will announce his signing later on Monday.

The Uganda-born German will be a direct replacement for Craig Bellamy, who moved to Manchester City last week.

The fee for Nsereko, 19, has not been revealed but it is expected to be a club record, topping the £7.5m West Ham paid Liverpool for Bellamy in 2007.

Hammers technical director Gianluca Nani worked with the Germany Under-19 international when he was at Brescia.

The forward can play in a variety of attacking positions and was named player of the tournament at last year's Uefa Under-19 Championship in the Czech Republic, which was won by Germany.

He was also reported to have attracted interest from Italian giants Roma and Juventus.

Nsereko has scored three goals in 17 appearances for Serie B side Brescia this season.

His signing will reassure fans who had feared the Londoners would only be a selling club during the January transfer window.

Owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson has been beset by financial problems in recent months and is considering selling the club.

But other than Bellamy, who was determined to leave Upton Park, West Ham have only sold fringe players Matthew Etherington, Lee Bowyer and Hayden Mullins.

Meanwhile, both the Hammers and Juventus have quashed speculation that Carlton Cole could be about to move from east London to Turin.

"We are very happy with the players we have in the team and we will not make any moves in the January transfer market," said Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco

Could be a star or a big fat flop.

A long-time target of Tottenham Hotspur, Brazilian striker Fred has been told he is free to leave Olympique Lyonnais if he can find a club. Reports emanating from Le Parisien suggest that this switch could be moving slightly closer as Spurs could be prepared to allow struggling Mexican youngster Giovani Dos Santos in a reciprocal deal.

When Zola took over at West Ham one thing I hoped he'd be able to do was introduce young talent either from the Italian youth teams or the Italian league. Hope this signing works out. Zola is a ledge, really want to see him do well.

    Veloso awaits City move

    Author: Andrew Allen
    Posted on: 27 January 2009 - 8:42 PM

Miguel Veloso is waiting for Manchester City to make a move after Bolton made an opening bid for the Portuguese international. Bolton boss Gary Megson has offered Sporting Lisbon £14million up front plus a 20 per cent future sell-on clause for Veloso, who is certain to head to England before the transfer window shuts on Monday. But big-spending Mark Hughes also wants to sign the 22-year-old, with Veloso and his advisors setting a deadline of Saturday for a deal to be sealed.

But it remains to be seen whether City follow-up their interest and offer the player the wage deal he wants, with the two north-west sides being the only clubs to have made approaches for the player.

Id like to see him being used here, i think he is a talent.

    Edit:

The move is confirmed now, will be interesting to see how he gets on,

Thats a good thing but it's also a bad thing it means that Sporting want City to bid some ridiculous figure for him ruling Arsenal out of any slim chance of signing Veloso. If De Jong cost £18mil then Sporting will want at least that if not more for Veloso imo
