Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Borked GFX card?

PC was fine - turned on screensaver and went away. Came back 10 mins later it had hung. Hard rebooted it and x will only run in vga mode. At the Ubuntu splash screen there's corruption on the left side of the screen - vertical lines down about one third of it. I created a xorg log file - http://pastebin.com/m71b3bef6

Can't get proper video working at all - tried reconfiguring X completely - reinstalled the video driver - no joy. I did notice some corruption at the BIOS splash screen too which does lead me to believe that the card is knackered. Anyone fancy having a look at that log file and confirming it?

    Thanks.

You say you tried reconfiguring x.org. Was this manually or using
    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Wouldn't say your card is knackered when you're getting anything out of it, even VGA resolution.

I did. And I tried nvidia-xconfig. And a different nvidia driver.

At launch I get the following:
(EE) Failed to load module "type1" (module does not exist)
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0
Screen(s) found but none have a usable configuration

Also as I mentioned there's corruption at the BIOS splash screen too. Just had a thought - possibly one of my screens is screwed - but the one that's showing the corruption is the one I'm typing on now in low graphics mode with no corruption.

TBH I've been driving all day and I'm shattered - I'll troubleshoot this some more tomorrow.

Any artifacts or glitches in the bios screens?

Are you using 8.04 or 8.10? Here's my xorg.conf for 8.10 using Geforce 8400 if it's any help.

Might be worth trying the Beta 180.06 driver as well, if you're using 177.

    :p

In work now so can't test - I can remote to install things or mess with xorg.conf but can't test results til this evening. There's no corruption on text based screens but there is on BIOS and Splash screens. However in Bunty (8.10 btw) in low graphics mode there's none. Quite strange really.

I had a thought about it tho - it's possible (unlikely but possible) that it's the screen that's the problem. I've a dual-screen system (19" main and 21" secondary) so I'll swap the two around and make the 21" the main one and see what happens.

Worst case - I do have a 9800GT 512Mb that I bought for my HTPC but haven't installed yet - may divert that to my gaming rig if the card is the problem.

Artifacts in the bios screen mean the gpu is fcuked, no ammount of trying different drivers will fix this.

I'm thinking that too but I'm going to swap the screens anyway and see. It's a long shot but worth ruling out at least. And then I'll try the 9800GT.

Well I pulled the cable from the primary screen and the other one was just as bad. It's a better screen too so I was able to see the full extent of the BIOS screen corruption - very bad. So card is borked. Swapped in the 9800GT and it was detected straight away which is final confirmation. Perfectly configured - all I had to do was re-enable Twinview.

PITA. The 8800 is a lovely card. I'm gonna check if it's under a mfg warranty and get it replaced but the 9800 will do me for now anyway.

Thanks for the help lads :)

[edit]Just logged into Wow and the graphics are a lot clearer - I might just keep this card anyway :)
