    Just watching this thing on TG4 where Andy Reid (the footballer is learning to play the banjo). Anybody know of any other contemporary banjo players (not trad) like Bela Fleck: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOrhbk48hNU

    might not be exactly what your looking for, and it's a few decades old, but it's a great album and interesting use of a banjo.

    Dave Day, the rhythm guitarist had replaced his guitar with a banjo (with a small microphone stuck inside the banjo's body) upon which he played guitar chords. The sound is very metallic and grating as a result.

    Neil Young has played banjo on a few of his albums, ditto Sufjan Stevens. Think theres a couple of REM tracks with Peter Buck playing banjo on them...
