Disability Allowance...

I am sorry if this is not posted in the right place, if not, please let me know, thanks!

I need to apply for a Disability allowance or Pension. I am not sure what the difference is to be honest. What is the difference in the process, can someone tell me?

Once you have applied, what is the procedure then? Does someone come out to your house, if so how long is it before that happens?

After that, how long is it before you get an answer?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Both are for illnesses that are expected to last longer than a year.
I believe Invalidity pension is if you don't expect to recover and Disability Allowance is if you expect to have periods of recovery, where if the illness reoccurs within three years, it's supposidly easier to get back into payment.
You can do some work and ask for permission afterwards with Disability Allowance (need to double check as info on citizensinforation site contracticts this).
To go straight onto either you'r disablement needs to have been spectacular and quick, where you'd be first be awarded a percentage of disablement. Normally you spend several months on illness benefit first.
Application forms are available from welfare offices in back of information booklet.
There are tax differences between the two.

All these no good for nothing government scroungers like you need to be done away with. Get up off your lazy ass and work.

That's a derogatory overgeneralisation. A lot of people on benefits are not lazy but face difficult circumstances, often through no fault of their own or simply bad luck. Even if in jest, please don't be so stereotypical.

    Hi Coco,
In my case, not typical, for disability allowance, applied Jan 08, supplied additional info Feb, Social Welfare Inspector (SWI) 1 visited in Feb, Claim rejected after 1st medical (Feb) in April, Community Welfare Officer (CWO) visit and second SWI visit March, and medical April, claim upheld in June and into payment July, nominally backdated to March.
Advice: find out who your CWO is, get them to give you a checklist, and make many copies of the paperwork as will be lost/sit on wrong desk for 4 months.
You'll need rentbook, years bank statements, p60 and/or p45, wageslips, utility bills etc
From claim date in August 07, took 11 months, and status still in flux.:(
    Happy new year
    Joseph

From the time I could work I have, since my teens, and I have never looked for any benefits from the Government up till now. I am now 42 and find myself in a situation out of my control. So if that offends anyone, believe me, it offends me worse.

Moving on. I very much appreciate all those individuals that have seen fit to give positive feed back here. Much appreciated.

Just to say that I am sorry that you got any derogatory comments here - it is not tough facing that you need to claim any benefit due to ill health but it has to be done and it is your right. I had to claim illness benefit for a year and I found that very tough.

Amen to that. Take no heed:) One day they too will be old and/or sick.

invilidity pension is based on your no of prsi controbutions, and is not means tested, you have to pass a medical for this disibility pension, you will not get it on the first application, if you are attending a specialist, make sure you have a report from him, also make copys of everything, never ever dump correspondence from the dept of social welfare, copy this also, failure to do this cost me dearly. best of luck.

As your location is Tipperary, you should visit one of the following Citizens information Centres for advice:
    http://centres.citizensinformation.ie/county.php?county=tipperary.

Also, no disrespect, but if English not your first language, get help with filling in the forms so the form is completed in grammatically correct English.

Have you a friend who can help with this?

Maybe the local priest or minister can recommend a volunteer who can help you complete the forms and check them so as to make sure you have described on the form every detail of your illness or disability.

well one question more,if I'm on DISABILITY ALLOWANCE and we say I wonna go for holidays(leave the country)for 2 weeks.do I have to report this some else?Getting payd to my bank account, dont need to sign something.
I'm asking because I leave the country (but back again in ie),got then a letter from the dissability allow.section in Tipperary with a appointment for next day, also was writting that:If cant coming just ring us to make a new date.Right,I rang them next morning and told them straight away that I'm in Germany and I'll be back in 2 weeks.Very nice person(on the phone says:no problem just when u back let me that know and we do a new appointment)That was a tue, every wed I got my payment to my bank account.Next day I wonna use my lasercard in germany put the card in atm machine, put my PIN and????NOTHING-no payment was made. Not this day,not the folllowing 3 weeks.A fter coming back, rang(in Longford) them and ask them what the story is.Lady says we stop to my because u wasnt in the country. She says if I wonna get my money again,I have to post her a copie of my ticket and a letter why I leave the country.Post that and 2 weeks later then rang them again because their was now answer.she says that I'm gettin up 2m my DISSABILITY ALLOW.payd again but no more to my bank account instead of to the nearest post office.
my question is ;can their do that and have their to pay all that money backdated????
ones again, thanks a million for every good advice.

    thanks,Rafael

P.S I know leds-english is not my best but I hope everyone is understanding about what I am talking

Invalidity Pension can take anything from 12 months to longer if you have to appeal the decision. Mine took 18 months from time of application to hearing of appeal. It is a long slow process be prepared to wait

"my question is ;can their do that and have their to pay all that money backdated????
ones again, thanks a million for every good advice."

    http://www.welfare.ie/EN/OperationalGuidelines/Pages/illben.aspx#part3

"Payment while on holidays or abroad

Overall, a person going to an EEA Member State is entitled to be treated as if s/he never left the State, regardless of the reason for leaving the State.

However, as the continued issue of payment(s) is dependent on the receipt of medical certificates the person should notify the Department (where possible) in advance to ensure that payment continues e.g. switched from medical certification to monthly certification.

A person who wishes to go to a non- EEA country for health reasons, may be entitled to Illness Benefit for the duration of his/her absence. While each case is treated on its own merits, a decision would take into account factors such as duration of claim at time application is received, nature of incapacity and likely period to be spent abroad.

In any event the person must notify the Department in advance of departure and is paid for the period of absence on his/her return."
