wap spam????

Ok I just started getting these messages today and I have no idea what they're all about. They seem to be some sort of WAP spam. The first one I got this afternoon went like this:

    ''offer is on its way

    Click Link!
Uwill subscribe @€;10 per wk. 18+.
Help? (0818****** number, not sure if I'm allowed to post the numbers related with the message, none of them take the form of personal moblie phone numbers from Ireland, can the mods tell me if I can post them?) SP:BDC.OptOut?
    text REMOVE to ***** ''

There was no link in the message to click not that I would have anyway. No credit was taken from my balance even though I'm afraid that it's only a matter of time. When I got the message it came up ''message recieved from FREE MSG'' as if I already have the number saved but I don't. Upon going through the message I got the number 33*****.

I then got another message this evening that seemed to come as if I had downloaded or had got it from the internet (there's a small globe symbol over the message envelope). It read:

    ''chq dis out................
    ...........Net rates may apply''

The message did not come from any phone number as none can be found in message information only a website address for iewap.mobi .

I can only assume that the missing links in the message and apparant gaps in the messages are only there because I'm not connecting the web to view them properly.

I don't use the web/wap or whatever it's called on my phone and nor do I subscirbe to any of those services offering ''ringtones/pictures/porn at €X per week'' and I never have used them.

So I'm pretty perplexed as to how they've started coming out of the blue.
I'm on Meteor and use a Sony Ericsson phone if that's any help.
Can the mods tell me if I can post the numbers and full Web address, they're not personal mobile or residential numbers.

Can anyone shed some light on the matter for me? I don't want to check my balance someday and find out I've no credit. Could it be that someone has my number and has found some way of sending me spam??

    Thanks.

    That's a premium rate number

As far as i know that illegal because all of these services have to respond to STOP

I don't think the link would have been in the message itself but if you pressed options one of the options might have been "go to link" or similar

They can set the from number as whatever they want, it doesn't have to be the number it's coming from or even a number as you can see here. Customer care can still see where it came from

I think that's a wap push message. I heard that sending you unsolicited spam to your inbox was illegal but sending wap push messages wasn't covered by the legislation so some companies still do it. Don't know how true that is. Unsolicited spam to your inbox is definitely illegal though

most likely they were just sending to random numbers but sometimes things like competitions that seem reputable will have it in the t&c that it signs you up to one of these. I think if you call yous network they can tell you if you're subscribed

Got the exact same txt just a minute ago. Bit worried tbh

UPDATE - Rang o2, they advised me that it was from "Opera Telecom" and sent an email on my behalf. Also they advised me to send STOP to that 5**** number and that they don't think ive been charged (havent recieved that 2nd txt yet) but if I have we'll know by tomorrow. Hopefully those txts have ****ed off

Only competiton I've entered using my mobile was on the Late Late Show or Today FM so shouldn't be either of them.

Thanks for all the info, makes it all a lot clearer
