    This is my shortlist:

    BMW 318 tds Compact
    VW Golf 1.9 TDi
    Toyota Corolla G6 1.3

Any advice? I'm thinking of buying a diesel. BTW this will be my first car.
So far these are the pros and cons i think about all three:

    318 TDS:
    PROS:
RWD :D; Sweet looks; rare enough around here; easily modded; suprisingly reasonable insurance :S.

    CONS:
Not as fun as petrol version (won't go slideways :( (not enough revs?) )

    Golf TDI:
    PROS:
    Common down here so own a sweet one and you'd put them all to shame (actuallly theres people buying GT TDI badges trying to look as good as the modded ones :L:L); TDI engine easily tunable;

    CONS:
As common as f**k down here, getting a bit old, high mileage

    Corolla G6:
    PROS:
Sweet Looks; Little needed to mod; Rare; Can get a easy lump exchange with glanza

    CONS:
Price, high insurance for 1.3 and its a Petrol. i believe theres a 2.0D version but its a car/van. I'm not convinced about getting a van, but a friend was telling me that you can put the seats in and register it or something??

    Any suggestions!??!?!

    i have a tdi golf

love it when the turbo kicks in just a pity it wouldnt last a bit longer!( its only the 90bhp)you should probably go for sonething a bit bigger maybe 130bhp?

and i get great mpg bcz shes a diesel!

Out of all of them I would go for the corolla. Unless the golf is 130bhp as stated above me I wouldnt buy one. As for the Bmw Im not gone on that either, it just lacks with that engine imo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,534 ✭✭✭SV

Whatever you do, do not go for that bmw.
Anyone who knows anything is gonna laugh at you for driving the cheap mans underpowered bmw, paying for a badge has never been more apparent than with the 3 series beemers.

As for the golf...they define boring. Nothing more to say about them really.

    Go for the Corolla.

  • Registered Users Posts: 595 ✭✭✭toco123

What are you saying 130bhp?? Golf TD Red i at most has 115Bhp? Or you could go GT TDI? Your talking €10,000? It's a first car remember... I'm thinking around €3000.

I agree Golf is boring and especially when out of a class of 30, 10 or more drive golfs.

As I said the corolla is too expensive though

Any other recommendations.. Personally i'd prefer a diesel

First car, probably cant drive properly, no full licence im guessing?

Your worrying about power sliding on a bmw

Go with the Corolla or a diesel 306/307

with 3 grand to spend it wont get you much of a corolla tbh
and with a first car, chances are pretty high you're going to have a tip or two

Then comes the insurance, are you actually able get cover on any of those cars? The corolla maybe

  • Registered Users Posts: 595 ✭✭✭toco123

just because im provisional does not mean i cannot have fun with my car??

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,917 ✭✭✭B00MSTICK

    The TDS really is tedious.

In fairness I'd say just make do with a cheap, reliable, low power, easy to tax/insure/fill with fuel car until you you can afford something decent.

Mk2 Golf or K10 Micra have a classic (boxy) look to them imo, and tidy up very well.

If not, I reckon the Seat Toledo isn't too bad

  • Registered Users Posts: 595 ✭✭✭toco123

@caliden: Corolla is the worst value for money insurance.. I'll be insured under the parents.

I wouldnt be keen on seats or micra tbh.

Might as well add 1.3 Lancer to the short list as well :P

are they underpoered or secretly packing a kick?

    Have a guess :P

Diesel is your best bet for power tbh

Unlesss you can find a cheap 1.6 VTEC/MIVEC/TVIS and put whatever you have left into insurance! Or maybe sell some computer bits/consoles?

not going to win any races in one but they are not bad at all.drive one myself ( was the brothers ) and havent had any problems with it in 3 years.good reliable car and can look very nice with a pair of alloys and spoiler.cheap too, probably get a nice looking one with long nct and road tax for about €1500 or so.

good first car i say, you can move on to something with a little more umph when you have a few years no claims.

put in a new gear knob, gaiter, hand brake thingy, pair of shades, a spoiler and you be looking good :P

    Nice.

go for the lancer 1.3 or a mirage 1.3

they're not as slow as you'd think....once they get going.. :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 595 ✭✭✭toco123

Is a 00 lancer the same shape as any of the evo range?
Like the same way sunny and pulser have exchangable parts

Id be interested in getting skirts etc. from an autofactor or something

Here you go. Its a cheapo so may not fit exactly right...

Id advise you to get one with a kit already though because you're looking at least 500 to buy a full kit, then you have to get it fitted and painted (possibly need to get the paint blended also)

They're very popular so shouldnt be too hard to find one with a kit and nice alloys.

should feel blessed that you can afford a first car let alone be picky, honestly.... your first car is never a tuner. >.>

My oul one has a 318 Diesel Compact... SAys enough i think..........

Dependin on your insurance, look at bringing in a nice EK9 Type R....

Failin that, the Mivec Colts it a great yoke to go too, Other wise just buy a Golf TDi and get it chipped. Plenty fast either way for your first car, which will prob end up in a wall no matter what car you buy.....

So actually. Buy a ball of Sh*te for a few months, chances are you'll have a few tips in it your first motor, save up for a decent machine in a few months time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 595 ✭✭✭toco123

Yah, the lancer i was looking at is gone :P
Is there any difference between GLX and well.... non-GLX?

That kit isn't that expensive.... bout 500 delivered :D

Ya... I'd want to get an exhaust system, 5 window tint, 17" alloys, and a full sound system. I own all the stuff for fibreglassing so i might give that a shot :D. I want to own something that stands out... for all the good reasons.

Still considering corolla 1.3, ill get a quick quote insurance wise...

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭Caliden

And you have about 3 grand to spend you say...

  • Registered Users Posts: 595 ✭✭✭toco123

Yes... for the car excluding insurance and mods.

Even the Lancer PLUS mods would come to just about that:
    Lancer w/ Spoiler 1700
    5 window tint 170
    Bodykit 500
    Sound System 300
    Alloys 300
    Exhaust System 100

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

Think your bein a bit ambitious with your funds there...

a set of "17's for 300 quid? Might get two for that.... Realistically they'll be more like 700 or so - unless you know someone sellin a second hand set for that money....

Likewise for the exhaust - 100 quid wont get you much - might get a decent backbox with some haggling.

Might get a decent head unit for 300 quid, dunno where you'll get the speakers for free tho....

  • Registered Users Posts: 595 ✭✭✭toco123

BK Racing sell a huge range and are extremelly cheap when you buy them direct.
Get a backbox no problem for less than a hundred quid.
You can buy a set of 12" xplod subs with an amp for 200 and components with an amp for about 100...
Ambitious???? maybe you just don't know where to look.. Especially when you say 300 for a head unit... You can find GPS/Bluetooth/DVD 7" flip up touch screen head units for 300? :L:L:L

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭Caliden

xplod subs are gonna sound a bit rubbish
I'm sure they'll do for the basshunter/clubland though

Don't forget rubber and paint mate, at least €80 a corner and prob €300 up to get the kit painted by a pro.

If you stick on an exhaust, induction kit and get it lowered your premium will jump a few hundred too.

I reckon you should just buy the best example you can afford and focus on the fancy sh*te later, thats what birthdays/christmas is for.

Remember, a POS with nice alloys, stereo set-up and bodykit is still a POS.
