Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Tuesday, 9 December 2008
    UEFA Champions League
    Barcelona v Shakhtar Donetsk, Gp C, 19:45
    Basle v Sporting, Gp C, 19:45
    Chelsea v CFR 1907 Cluj-Napoca, Gp A, 19:45
    Marseille v Atletico Madrid, Gp D, 19:45
    Panathinaikos v Anorthosis Famagusta, Gp B, 19:45
    PSV v Liverpool, Gp D, 19:45
    Roma v Bordeaux, Gp A, 19:45
Werder Bremen v Inter Milan, Gp B, 19:45

Chelsea need a victory with Roma most likely putting out a strong side to try top the group. Liverpool also will be looking for a victory and possibly some goals should goal difference decide the group with Atletico. Elsewhere newcomers Anorthosis Famagusta could defy the odds and make it to the knock-out stage in their first apperarance in the competition.

Roma team just in. Chelsea look like they are going to have to go for it now as Roma have the full side out against Bordeaux bar Vucinic.

Is Vucinic injured or suspended? I assume he is not being rested

    Barcelona 2-3 Shakhtar Donetsk

There goes Barcelona's 20 game unbeaten run. Hardly a game of importance as they already had the group won and rested most of the first team for saturdays El Clasico.

I cant see the special one being to pleased about his teams performance tonight. They surrendered top spot and now find themselves in the difficult position of having to possibly face:

    Barcelona
    Liverpool
    Man Utd
    Arsenal
    Lyon

Would just like to point out we're not guaranteed top spot by any stretch of the imagination. We're playing Porto tomo night without:
Fabregas, Nasri, RVP, Adebayor, Sagna, Gallas and Clichy...

Most of those other teams you listed have already come first/will most likely come first.
We're the opposite, we'll more than likely be second.

I saw the word 'possibly', was just commenting :)

No problem brother. Hope they get a result tomorrow night. Either way for Arsenal the could have a difficult tie regardless were they finish.

    Come second possibly play:
    Roma
    Panathinaikos
    Barcelona
    Lyon
    Juventus

    Come first possibly play:
    Inter
    Sporting
    Atletico
    Villareal
    Bayern Munich
    Real Madrid

The teams I'd be most worried about.
I'd really like to avoid barca at all costs... :p

Ah come on Laura, seeing as you were far an away the better team in the CL final (as some fans will lead you to believe), were completely robbed, I'm sure you'd want to enact some revenge.

Lenin will back me up here anyway, Fabregas is just a more youthful complete Xavi. :pac:

Disappointed with tonight really, even though it meant nothing, it would have been nice to continue the 20 game unbeaten streak.

I have no doubt that Arsenal vs Barca would be a cracking display of football considering we both like to play very attacking football.
However I think you would slaughter us, so I'm gonna hope for you to get knocked out at some stage on the other side of the draw to us before we reach the final :D

Well, as much as it pains me to admit this, the other three English teams, Chelsea to a lesser extent could easily get a result off Barca with a more defense minded approach.
Something Arsene wouldn't suffer to happen with us.

It was a complete second string side though, against a team that Barça were extremely lucky to beat in the away tie. With top spot already secured, Guardiola used the opportunity to rest his first team players and test his youngsters out against decent opposition.

Bet you wont be disappointed if a refreshed Barça side turn over the blancos on Saturday!;)

The group stages this year have been so boring.
No exciting groups, no particular stand out matches. We already know all 16 qualifiers before tomorrows night action.
    Bring on the knock-out stages.

Are you serious? Inters group, there's only 4 points between top spot and last. Panathanikos are first, and they were dire for their first two matches. I think this CL has been the one where the lower tier teams have done well, Basel got a point from the Nou Camp...

He is serious and correct never has it been duller, apart from the odd shock, very little of interest apart from Inter's group who had already qualified. So two games of slight interest one involving one of the richest clubs in the world needing a home draw against a team no one had heard of up to last year. It's sad that the only bit of excitment was the 10 minutes or so when Chelsea might have been knocked out.
The problem is that the CL is so lucrative that all the big sides in Europe are getting so wealthy that most of them can field reserve teams in the final group games because they have already qualified for the next stage. The chasm between rich and poor increases every year and it looks like the G14 or 18 have their wish of a European Super League which UEFA fought against and which is why the CL was formed in the first place.

Is any game worth watching tonight apart from going through motions.

Since all groups qualifying is decided there is no appeal to turn it on tonight

Lyon v Bayern Munich, Gp F, 19:45 should be worth a look. Both sit top of the group and will be battling for first and both sets of teams have some cracking players.

I'm getting some extra brownie points with the woman tonight, she knows I love the CL, but I am "sacrifcing" the night of football to go to the cinema with her.
