Tax credits?

    Sorry if this is in the wrong section btw!

    But I'm confused over my tax credits...

    I'm a full time student and have a pretty steady part time job. I have never been on emergency tax- the accountant at work sorted it out for me. I've been working there since Aug '07. I got a letter today called 'Tax credit certificate 2009'. On the back it said i have €1830 tax credits... What does this mean?

    Someone said it's what I can claim back, which got me excited for about 10 seconds. But now I seriously doubt that... Is it what I have paid or something?
