Ok, these are the ones I bothered taking over the month... but there's been a hell of a lot more I've seen. Galway is crazy bad for it.

Looks like Nightline didn't learn anything...

    Taken 08/09/11, 13:06 - 13:07, And the van number is NLV 813

    Same day at 14:43

Incase you can't see the sign, it says
"24 hour emergency access gate, any vehicle blocking this gate will be towed away" - It's the side entrance to the hospital grounds. Common enough place for people to park obnoxiously, these guys drove off before I could get closer.

Some of the parking in the Hospital is priceless, you don't know where to look in this pic

    (look at the background too)

Apologies for the quality of this one - Iphone cam at night... but... You can see 3 cars parked on double yellows (just nipping into the shops to the left), and one unfortunate person trying to get out of the underground who's blocked in by a double-yellow parker - Can't get around the car as there's metal poles in the way coming out of the underground

And if we cross the road, we find another Nightline van... Parked in a taxi rank

Seems like the ROTR do not apply to people going into the doctors and maybe what ever is next door as well, Google Street View has two different images -- two and one -- of cars parked around there.

And it seems this is what they're dodging by being OPs: P&D parking a short distance around the corner. But who cares if they're on a footpath and cycle lane, as long as they're not getting in the way of real traffic.

Is there any way of quoting a post, but only the URL of a pic and not the photo itself, all in one operation?

I find that I have to submit the quote-containing reply first, with photo included, click the edit button immediately afterwards in order to change the IMG tags to URL, then re-submit.

I know the photo can just be deleted when quoting the post, but sometimes it's handy to include the link as well. Having to do it in two stages is fiddly, and it increases the likelihood of pics being quoted, IMO.

It seems to always be the creche, never the doctor's surgery - just after traffic lights, before bus stop, on footpath and in cycle lane.

It down to people being to lazy to park across the road - they even have a number of spaces where the parking charges end at 5pm to allow people pick up form the creche.

Since when does convenience trump safety? Reversing into a main road is illegal.

Blaming 'design flaws' seems to be a common excuse here. Personal responsibility, anyone?

To be fair, Nightline are only going to be there for a minute or two. I'd prefer to see them there than get a call later saying they couldn't deliver because there was nowhere suitable to stop.

If you look at the angle of the parking lines, and the flow of traffic, you'll see that the angles aren't conducive to revering into easily. Car would need to swivel more than 90 degrees to get in (BETWEEN THE LINES, which is the point of this thread) - not very easy to do when you're trying to get in on the same side of the road, harder if you're trying to get in beside 1 or 2 cars, without pushing your nose out onto the other side of the road, and completing in one maneuver.

From the picture, if they were angled to the left, instead of to the right (on the nearside of the road from where the picture was taken), you'll see that it would be easy to get in if exercising "safe" parking (front to road), as the car only has to swivel maybe 60 or 70 degrees.

Having said that, unless it's an illegal maneuver, I don't see the issue with reversing out, as for the majority of cars on the road, the driver is close to the centre of the car anyway, so being able to see isn't the issue for the majority of cars on the road. Back end of the car is usually bigger and more visible than the front end, so if it's sticking out, or coming out, it's likely to be more visible to approaching motorists.

Whether safe or not, correct or incorrect, whoever was responsible for painting the lines in the picture had in mind that the parking cars would drive into the spaces nose first.

Far be it from me to make excuses for obnoxious/illegal parking, but on mature reflection I think the design flaw argument may be a reasonable one in this case.

If angled parking spaces were designed for reversing into, they would be angled in the opposite direction, would they not?

In any case, is it not normal practice to reverse when parallel parking alongside the kerb, whether on a main road or not?

It's illegal to reverse from a minor road onto a major road, but is it also illegal to reverse when already on a main road?

Give some motorists a road, and they'll take the cycle lane and footpath anyway.

BTW, is StreetView now in 3D? ;)

I know that area, and the parking mayhem around it.

Yes: "A driver shall not reverse from a place adjacent to a public road onto a public road save where it is clear to the driver that to so reverse would not endanger other traffic or pedestrians."

Since, those diagonal spaces offer little or no visibility for reversing, especially if there is another vehicle alongside, it's clear that reversing from such a parking place would be illegal.

A wise driver would reverse in or find a safer place.

If you mean the navy corsa in the same photo as the Kia, then I didn't actually miss it. I was going to take a photo but as I walked through the gates, the bonnet was up and he was genuinely pulled in having a tinker with something. Not like someone who just abandoned the car there, so not fair game, unlike that Saab which was parked 10m down from him with no excuse. :)

One from a while ago. Before you ask yes that is a parked car with a space in front of it. The car was actually blocking 3 others cars in. The two guards (waiting at the entrance to one of the apartment blocks) in question were watching me take the photo.
