    Oh its even less now? Well then, there goes my conspiracy theory :D Unless of course it was artificially high in 2004 also :D then i can have my conspiracy.

    Oh and no billyhead the fuel at tesco is the same as others. It gets delivered by Statoil. Not sure if thats the case still since statoil are gone but it certainly was until Topaz bought everything with a petrol pump.

    Not entirely true, its gets delivered by Statoil via Northern Ireland so the product is completely different source than the rest of the fuel in this country (which is mainly from TOP).

    For your information.

    Duty on petrol is 50.88c per litre, VAT at 21.5% is charged on top of that so duty actually costs 61.82c.
    Duty on diesel is 36.81c per litre, VAT at 21.5% is charged on top of that so duty actually costs 44.72c.

    So a breakdown for unleaded is:

    27.46c = net cost per litre
    50.88c = Government Duty
    16.84c = VAT on (net + Duty)
    95.18c = typically what a petrol station is paying for a litre of Unleaded.

    My impression is forecourts used to make a lot of money from breakfast rolls and food etc. i.e the construction industry, Now if that trade has dropped off would forecourts not want to hold prices up to compensate for loss in revenue?

    Just a thought what do ye think?

    Where did you get these figures?

    I have a platts sheet in front of me and you are WAY WAY out

    in some cases yes, in most cases no.

    A lot of places are on a per litre retainer. They get a fixed fee per litre sold, so in actual fact the price is irrelevant to them other than them wanting it to be as low as possible as the more they sell the more money they make.

    Kinda messes up all the conspiracy theories doesn't it.....

    Rathnew Service station, Wicklow - 98.9 cent per litre for unleaded.
    Nice to see it below €1 in wicklow (a relatively expensive place to purchase petrol)

    Topaz fuelcard max price is down to 96.57c petrol / 97.13 diesel as of midnight

    That must be the first time its actually noticeably below the Dublin average in MONTHS, but its presumably a sign of thinks to come in the next week or so.

    No sooner had I shown my regretful agreement at a previous poster who was saying the price of petrol is high in Galway, it is now down to 99.9 in both the Topaz at the end of the Quincentennial bridge and the Esso at Terryland.

    About time!!

    96.8 petrol
    94.8 diesel
    why does it cost different prices in different parts of the country

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,998 ✭✭✭✭L1011

    Distribution costs differ with distance. I'm nearly sure the greatgas.ie (small mostly southern franchise/brand) website had detailed prices once upon a time, but it does currently mention that delivery costs are based on distance...

    Local business rates vary
    Average retail wages vary
    Volumes vary

    And so o...
