Spoke too soon. Heres what I got back:

"Hi, many thanks for your email.

All of our prices are subject to change without notice to reflect increased supplier costs. Unfortunately, at the current time many manufacturers are imposing substantial price increases, some but as much as 30%. In these instances we have no choice but to increase our prices accordingly.

I can assure you that GAK intend to remain the most competitive priced online musical instrument retailer, and prices are being continually monitored to ensure that any potential savings are passed on to customers in the form of discounted prices and special offers.

If you would like to discuss the pricing of any particular item before placing an order, please contact our Mail Order Department on 01273-665400, option 1 (9.30am - 5.30pm) and they will be more than happy to help.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any further assistance. "

Midnight Wine is a MIM only colour(so the bass must be MIM), which is a shame, it'd be awesome with a maple fretboard!

Argh, o well. All things going well i should have myself a new bass of the 6 string variety for febuary so i think il be content :). Thank you weak pound :D.

    Just checked XE.com - right now €1 = 93p!

Is everyone oblivious to the fact that the exchange rate offered on CC's is far below the 'proper' exchange rate - or are people paying in different forms?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Jimi, credit cards offer very close to the exchange rate. It's when you go into a bank to change money that you get a lower rate. Or if you use paypal

Anyone actually bought anything from GAK in the last couple of days?

If so, were you getting a good exchange rate?

From a different post by me -

XE is currently showing GBP to EUR as 0.94396...

No chance any bank is going to give me the same rate...

BOI card services are a joke, they cant tell me the rate applied to cards because they dont have a currency converter..

    Update -

The purchase I enquired about was a £680, the total in Euro would be €825 including a 1.75% handling fee...

That means that for £680 you are charged €810 - exchange rate = 83.95%

    What a shower of bastards...

Having said that, the bloke on the phone sounded like a complete muppet...

The last sterling transaction I have on my Bank Of ireland credit card is from December 8th and the conversion rate is showing .8571 which as far as I can tell should have been fairly reasonable to the rate at the time.

**EDIT** Just checked the rate that day and it was .8651. Thats just over a cent lost which I would be extremely pleased with it it still applies.

I've found the rates used by MBNA to be pretty good. I asked them about it before and they said that they take the daily rate from XE or another of the exchange rate sites. Obviously they add on their little bit (1.75% I think??)

    Guys and Gals,

I'm thinking of maybe getting a jazzmaster in the new year from ishibashi or the UK.
With the sterling more or less equal to the € at the mo, would it be better if I got one of gak or dolphin, seeing as the shipping would be a lot less...?
Or does ishibashi still work out cheaper?
    Any recommendations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

I think GAK is working out to be the cheapest place right now to buy guitars. They'll also price match other UK sites. The only reason to buy from ishi right now is if it's something you cannot get on GAK. Just look up guitars on both websites and go for whatever is cheapest. Remember that shipping to Ireland from ishi is 16,000 Yen so add that onto the cost of the guitar and then add 25% of that total price for import fees and VAT.

yup, haha, that would involve me putting in effort. I thought there may have been someone who had compared already on here, but I should give em a shout yeah....

I got a CIJ Jazzmaster from Ishibashi two years ago, for me it was a choice between Ishi and Thomann. The only reason I went with Ishibashi was you can't get block and binding necks on Jazzies from anywhere else (AFAIK)!

I don't think it worked out any more or less expensive than Thomann, the guitar was cheaper, but the shipping was more expensive. I dunno how GAK would measure up, I can't remember the exact figures.

    (I love my Jazzy!)

You can't buy new Japanese Fenders from Ishibashi anymore, it's to do with their contract with Fender Japan.

It's probably best to ring the stores, you might get a better price than advertised on their site :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,863 ✭✭✭seachto7

yeah, I'll try the 2 English shops and see what they get back with...

Anyone have a comparison of the shipping rates from the different UK stores? I'm curious as to why people get GAK to price match rather than just buying from the cheaper store - cheap shipping?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Standard shipping seems to be about £26

I used gak, after finding the guitar on another site cheaper and getting them to price match, mainly because the other site wanted a bank transfer instead of CC payment and also gak were very quick to reply to any correspondence I had with them, even though I hadnt purchased anything from them.

Also from my limited experience with them, I would advise ringing to order rather than ordering online. You can try and haggle for a little bit more off over the phone.

Really pissed off right now. Juno-DM's gone up from ~£319 to £389 since yesterday. Damnit :( so much for holding out for that exchange rate parity..

Their website had a notice up about that when I got mine, I just sent them an email anyway, there was never any trouble about it. Have they tightened up about it?

Anyone reckon other manufacturers will raise retail prices similar to Ibanez after xmas due to the weak sterling? I'm contemplating another purchase from GAK after xmas. Not sure whether to stick in the order now or wait til I get paid again (suit me better)

Well the thing is, that with the weakening sterling, it becomes cheaper for us to "export" guitars, but it becomes more expensive for them to "import" the gear, so i'd be expecting things to go up in price soon enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,026 ✭✭✭✭adox

Do guitars from gak usually ship with a hard case? I ordered my Ibanez from them last Friday and with the excitement of it all forgot to ask them.

The Ibanez 2009 pricelist was released to retailers the other day and has major price increases on most things. Gak may have already applied the hike to their current stock. I'll check into it and compare the prices. But if you're looking at something, now's the time (from a retailer that hasn't updated their prices yet).

Well all prices on ibanez are going up after xmas, as far as I know they are raising theyre rrp and distrubution costs.

I had a JEM77 ordered from thomann and cancelled it when I saw this post and checked GAK! :) Price difference of about 700e!

Any idea if Ibanez is doing a blanket price increase? I was gonna wait to see if the exchange rate gets even better but I shouldn't probably risk it!

On a related note, do any banks have credit cards that don't have the extra ~1.75% handling fee on forex transactions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,291 ✭✭✭-=al=-

What other payments do gak accept? i really cant use the credit card, its crazy high, but the prices are so good on gak

Yes. Price increases on most models, fairly big. Its the same every couple of years. Some shops have already put up their prices so shop around.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,863 ✭✭✭seachto7

are there any advantages of using one of the UK shops over a German one, apart from the price? Do the same VAT shipping prices apply to all. Or would it be plain as day that it would be cheaper to ship from the UK...?
