Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

XP welcome screen freezes

    Hello,

I'm new to these parts, and needless to say I have a problem - a computer one that is.

I'm running XP Pro (and SP3 I think, but can't remember for sure). Last night 10 Windows automatic updates downloaded and installed on my computer as I turned it off.

This afternoon I went to turn on my computer, but as it booted, the usual black "XP" screen came up with the scrolling bar, then the blue XP screen with the Widows XP logo - and there it stayed. It is just frozen there and the login panel won't come up.

I've tried rebooting (many times, by holding the on button for 5 seconds). I've tried safe mode. I've tried last known good, and I've tried booting from the XP CD. Nothing is working however.

On a slightly different note, for the last few weeks/months when I boot my computer, my monitor is often not recognised and just stays on standby. To solve it I have to reboot (again holding the on button for 5 seconds), maybe twice. On occassion when it boots, and the login screen appears, the bottom quarter has a diagonal line going across and all below this line is pure white. Is this a graphics card issue?

Any help is greatly appreciated as I don't want to face doing a reinstall, ad setting up my RAID0 all over again.

    Regards.

If you can't get into safemode I've no idea- But use a linux live CD to copy and data you need to a usb drive

When the welcome screen is frozen, press Alt+Tab in case there's an error message/dialog box hiding behind it. That will bring it foward so you can see it.

Did you try VGA mode when you press F8?

    Thanks for your replies.
After much head scratching, I tested my HDDs to see if one of them had failed. Neither had. I then tried booting from the XP CD, reinstalled my RAID0 drivers and eventually managed to get XP to do a repair. This worked (sort of).
Most things in the start menu are now pointing to the wrong location though. I have to go to the HDD, program files etc to open things.
I also get the following message when I log on:
It's from ATI MOM.EXE and says "please set registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\.NET Framework\InstallRoot to point to the .NET Framework install location".
I downloaded .NET Framework 2.0 and installed it, but get the same message. It won't let me upgrade my graphics driver without this.
