I second the above. I had really really bad skin for like three years then I began using acne.org's cream and now i only get the odd few pimple here and there and my scars are starting to heal up finally :D

After 2 years of acne that opened veins and ruined countless pillows :P
I tried every herbal, natural, homemade remedy you could think of. To no avail.
I was prescribed bi-micin. A word of advice, if the pills don't work within 2 months, move on to mino-micin. Again, two months. This didn't happen for me, four years later I was told this by a specialist. After six months of each.
He prescribed me with Ro-Accutane. I owe this man my life. 6 months and I could slap myself in the face. Sure I have insane scars, but hey, laser therapy in a few months and they will be gone. To sum it up, if you have incredibly bad acne, visit a specialist and don't waste years with weaker cures.

Thats good advice but remember there are side affects to ALL drugs. Roacc is particularly nasty. Speaking from personal experience and reading the literature about it. Derms throw it about as an acne cure all...

From me it was very effective for only 2 years. Then my acne came back as strong as ever. So watch for that....

Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5% worst side affect was dry skin for the first 10 days. It has kept me acne free for 10 years, and most other people for their entire life time...

The first study on BP & acne was done in the 50's. It is an extremely safe, long term solution for acne. Roaccutane is none of these. Personally i cant believe its even licensed

True that the side effect were harsh, mood swing and stuff, but I didn't feel them, it was other people.
I was also told that only 8% of people will need a second dose if the acne returns. That's really bad luck man sorry :(
I tried and couldn't use Peroxide due to the fact that almost all of my acne were open. Every use ended with me in a freezing shower 5 mins later. I couldn't take the pain.

    Sounds rough!

BP 2.5% is quiet mild! Were you on 10%? Any idea the brand?
Some brands of BP have very nasty additives too

Glad to hear you're clear now

I can remember trying to brave the pain for a while so I tried both 2.5% and 10%. Couldn't tell you the brand though sorry. White tube with 2 blue stripes around the top is all I can remember.

I had bad acne for years, tried everything, and I mean everything, I could get my hands on. Eventually after 4 years on different anti biotics I went to a derm and got prescribed roaccutane. It was a low dose, 40mg, over 5 months and it worked a treat. I was also very lucky with pretty much zero side effects. The worst being the dry lips.

I understand its a hard drug, with serious potential side effects but if you have tried everything else and if you do your research it is worth considering.

You can go back through this thread to find my sort of ongoing reports of when I was on it. From november to april of this year.

It was bad with 40mg but only after 2 months I was put on 60mg. It was like my lips had been burned off.....

I was also on roaccutane and was very lucky with side effects, only dry lips and occasional headaches. Definitely worth it, I'm even getting complimented now on how good my skin is :D Definitely not something I ever imagined after 9 years of acne!

Lads, I've literally just started on the 'oul Roacc and I'm wondering what to expect.
I've got SAD (seasonal affective disorder) so I'm kinda worried that it'll get worse.
Anything else I should be prepared for?
    Thanks!

Just started Roaccutane. Amazing how seriously the doctor takes it, I had to do blood tests and go on the pill and prove I 'm not pregnant. I'm aware of the side-effects but I don't care, this acne has gone on long enough and I'm pretty pissed off with this sh*t.

I used Benzoyl Peroxide for four years and its all well and good for mild acne, but with the full blown painful cystic acne (the kind I have now) it does absolutely nothing.
Roacc isn't for your avereage teenager who gets a few spots here and there, its a powerful drug for people who have tried literally everything.

So just wondering guys is Benzoyl Peroxide a product I can get over the counter in a pharmacy or is it an ingredient contained within another product?

Plain over the counter stuff. Some of the strongest concentration is prescription though.

Hey! I was on Roaccutane for 9 months and even though it took a while to work it was the best thing ever!!! :) I cannot stress enough how much this changed my life! I had been using loads of different tropical creams and antibiotics since I was 12 and had tried the pill aswell. I finished it about 7 months ago now and my skin has been completely clear since! I had very little side effects apart from my lips being very dry and I'll admit did feel abit done at the beginning for about 2/3 months but I think that could have been because of the pill aswell. I would just recommend to get a good moisturiser for dry skin, and I'll be honest I used loads of different products for my lips but nothing worked as such...just stick to vaseline! Apart from that just stick it out...it'll be worth it in the end :)

I read a study which showed that milk causes acne. I'll try to find it.

hi, im 19 and up until about 4 months ago i have had relativly good skin. the odd spot but nothing big. but then since i started shaving weekly wit a bladed razor, spots have been poping up everywer.

then i went onto a automatic razor and tryed proactiv 3-step remadie.

my skin is not back to normal but it is still pretty good.
recently i have got a couple of spots around my mouth, and haave been using quinoderm..

do people think quinoderm is good and do you have any other advice about the razor or proactiv??
    thanksin advance

Does it matter what brand of Benzoyl peroxide you get?
This is the only brand I see at boots
    http://www.boots.com/en/OXY-10-Benzoyl-peroxide-lotion-30ml_872935/

This may have already been said but ICE

I only recently started getting pretty mild acne for whatever reason, but I like having a clear face so I find it annoying!

I find using Ice on spots at least reduces the redness/size of spots.

Just don't contact the skin directly wrap the ice in some sort of towel/cloth

    Hope this helps :pac:

I finished Roaccutane almost 2 years ago now, I had to take 2 courses so it was over 9 months or 15 months or whatever it was including the 3 month break.

The side-effects really are rough, but within 6 months of coming off it, I was more or less normal again.
My acne didn't return at all, but I still have pretty uneven tone of skin and a big nasty scar.

Overall it's totally, totally worth it. The blood tests do get annoying though...

I cannot advise you enough to get some BP products. I've used it for the last two years and acne wise, this has been the best two years of my life since The Curse started! Btw i learned about bp on a website called acne.org and it's the regime from that site that I follow. Anyway if you're just starting with BP try something like Oxy on the spot and rub it all over your face, not just on a specific pimple. You can buy that in boots. Your face will go mad red and dry but keep at it! If you find after a few weeks that it isn't strong enough, try a 5% bp product. I used quinoderm 5% which has to be ordered in Ireland but if you go to the UK it's over the counter. Theres also panoxyl but i found that didn't work for me. Good luck!

Make sure the cleanser isn't a very harsh one and that the moisturiser is heavy duty. Please don't give up if your face goes very red, I know tis humiliating BUT if it works for you in the end.... :)

Well luckily for me it mostly just my forehead that gets the acne and my hair is covering most of that at the minute so not too worried :)
