What are the chances of VDSL been rolled out here in Ireland and if so, who would the main players be?

Beyond 1.5km it's not much advantantage. Best advantage over ADSL2+ is <800m line length and 20Mbps to 100Mbps.

The cost of LLU (inc all the "extras" not just the line) holds back non-eircom ISPs from deployment.

Thanks for the reply Watty but what do you mean by "advantage"?

Just looking into a report now in relation to future broadband technologies and was just trying to put it into an Irish perspective.

I presume the roll out of fibre optic isnt cost effect since the population is so spread out?

What Watty meant, is that VDSL only is better than ADSL2+ if you are less than 800m from the exchange. On longer distances, ADSL2+ performs better.

For this reason and the fact, that a lot of customers are over 800m from the exchanges, it's not feasable to do a VDSL rollout in the first place.

Beyond that, already the ADSL2+ rollout is limited due to the extreme costs to unbundle exchange to any other other telco than Eircom.

Another issue is, that the 800 meters only apply, if it's good copper. In a lot of areas the copper wouldn't be that good, so the distances would be even less.

To my knowledge eircom have stated in public they will do a trial of VDSL, mainly in small parts of Dublin.

Pierre gave this presentation in 2007 - now out of date.

Watty - SLU and LLU are different :)

SLU used for VDSL, LLU for ADSL

    Your point remains valid though.

    Of more pertinence

    1. Fewer than 25% of lines are under 800m, likely only 15%
    2. Fewer than 20% of exchanges have ADSL2 .
