What an arsehole. Some of Maynooth's faculties are regarded as the finest in the country. Maths Dept for one and others that could be listed. Obviously has a chip on his shoulder due to not being loved by Maynooth's legions of hot women. Poor guy :(

And perhaps you can forgive NUIM for not having all the departments you listed considering it was only established in 1997, while other irish universities that have a wider range of departments are well over a hundered years old.

    Precisely.

NUIM needs time to put these departments in place. I'm sure by the time it has been around for as long as say Trinity has been around at the present time, it will have these departments up and running. These steps will come as part of NUIM's growing process.

    +1. Tool.

Good benchmarking for performance, going by absent departments. MIT must be fairly awful by that logic.....

Also, points are close to meaningless in terms of difficulty, quality or content, and more to do with place numbers

Then again, its highly likely Partybeamish was just trollin'

Very surprised to hear just how new the college actually is. My class this year is the first time they've hadd a dedicated first year history class, and at first I was like 'What took them so long?'

At this rate, the college has probably surpassed its own ten year plan!

Senior maths lecturer told me in person that the maths dept embarrassed him with the low standards.

Name and shame. I can understand that in first year, especially with all of those whiny science students who "only did pass maths wtf", but I've found the second year standards pretty high (that is the questions being asked, not the results people are getting)

*cough* Best and most diverse music department in Ireland. *cough*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 650 ✭✭✭Aridstarling

Maybe, but the music technology (in first year at least) has been dire. No standard at all, no challenge for anyone with even basic knowledge, no studio work after 5 months in the place. Ridiculous.

Low standard of students perhaps. Faculty members are top notch.

I think my last post was pretty comprehensive on the matter..all fact or will you ignore it..as it prob hurts.

How could it possibly hurt us that you don't care for our uni? Oh noez, some person on the internet thinks Maynooth is pointless, waah! It's very trollish to keep up the arguing you know.

To be honest you'll find that in any University you visit. I've had Professors at Cambridge and Harvard tell me that they think the standards in their own departments are rubbish. In at least one of those cases I later discovered that the Professor in question was quite bitter about certain aspects of his career and was nothing more than an embittered old fart who stirred as much sh*t as possible whenever possible. :) You get them everywhere.

That said, the quality of some Cambridge first class honours graduates in genetics is appalling! I've had them ask me questions that I would have been embarrassed to ask in fourth year in NUIM and that's not a specialised degree like the Cambridge one supposedly is!

Also, a certain Pharmacy degree from one of Irelands 'top' Universities was considered one of the worst in Europe so in many cases you are better off not having a department than having one that is a laughing stock.

Wouldn't say that now, with some of the crusty gentlemen around all one had to do was shave periodically and refrain from drooling to stand out from the crowd.
    :p

Acacia, you continue to impress, didn't know you were a Maynoothian. :D

Ahem. Back on topic. Maynooth's small size is both its strength and its downfall. There is, if you're willing to put in a small effort socially, a great sense of community to be found. Conversely, it can get a bit claustrophobic and monotonous if you let it.

I think the key is to do as much extra-curricular stuff as you can, join a society or two. It's up to the individual to make their time there enjoyable.

I'll probably go back to do my M.A. in September, having been to a couple of other places I appreciate it all the more.

    Aw thank you! *bows*:D

Isn't one of the best things about Maynooth the ratio of guys to girls? Isn't it something like 3 girls to every guy? That should make it first choice on the CAO. :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

3:1 what a sweet ratio. Though if it was 10:1 I'd be more content I'd say. They should do something about that. Petition anyone? :D

Why is it that at exam time, all these hot men that aren't seen the rest of the time appear? Whats the deal with that?

Hot people don't regularly attend lectures. They're too busy being hot and stuff. Photo shoots, pillow fights, that sort of thing. Or so I've heard

I was thinking that maybe they all hide in the library, and I only see them when *I* decide to study. Hmm, I'll have to test this theory.

I was in Maynooth from 1987 to 1991. Judging from the thread not much has changed...

...students really do get sick of the place after 4 years:D

i think people are just being really harsh about the place... its a good college.. obviously it looks a bit grey and depressing, but any college ive seen looks the same!!! and obviously the longer you spend there the less attractive it becomes, secondary school went like that too...!!!

Did a year in DCU. I didn't like the course I was doing or want a career out of it, but it was still awesome. The lecturers did every little thing they could - games, puzzles, funny cartoons - to make it interesting. The computer labs weren't a joke because they hired people who knew what they were doing. And the library. Oh, the library.

There's so much that could be improved in the college, and a lot of it could be done in 24 hours with no disruption to services. Like the latest version of browsers and plugins on the PCs, letting people who bring their own laptops into the library be able to print from them - stupid stuff that's an easy fix.

See my 'Let's fix the Library' thread on moodle for further ideas ;)

right. this is starting (starting?? ) to meander off topic - in all honestly I was unsure whether it was a valid thread to start with but it has proven me wrong and been interesting.

can we try to get back to the original topic. if its dead, then let the thread sink away to its eternal rest.
