Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have an old car and it breaks my heart if its not being looked after by a competent Pro but I also hate to be ripped off!

Can we get a comprehensive list of the best garages/mechanics in Waterford and if youve had a bad experience I would like to know!

I recommend Tony O'Byrne, think the road he's on is St. John's Lane, it's up Newgate Street. We've been going to him for years.

We went to tom murphys and got a services and they didnt do what we wanted and threw the keys back at us without any "walk around" which i would expect at those prices and when its an older vehicle!

I go to advance pit stop but i need an engine rebuild now! any advice on that?

  • Registered Users Posts: 77 ✭✭tiny-tyno

I bought my car in Tom Dales the only reason as to why is my Goddaughters father works there and is a mchanic.
I think they are very good on prices all you would need to do is go in a ask them for a quote to how much the job would cost at least then you can compare prices and see which one suits yourself the best.:D

whatever ya do ,dont go to <SNIP>

Tom Murphy's is very expensive and if you are not familiar with the workings of a car, you will walk away feeling you have been shafted in the nicest possible way.

I like to think i know a bit about cars and would always look up an item or get some words about parts and make it clear to the garage that i know what im talking about!

I wasnt so much the price as i wouldnt spare expense on my car as its older but the way they dealt with us in Tom Murphys that got to me!

They didnt do the work we asked them to do and a problem arose two weeks later due to the very same problem got screaming and shouting when i went back and told that i had to get a tow truck if i wanted them to even take a look at it again! they didnt even tell us " how she was running" after that so it was more so the servic there

There are a few decent mechanics around the place, one is Shane Brown, down by the peoples park.. have heard nothing but good things about him.. dunno if he does engine rebuilds but you can ask him.

Another is O'Sheas out past Tramore when heading to Fenor, friendly guys, good service and always helpful. Not bad prices too.

What make of car is it?

Its a VW T4 Multivan left hand drive got it in Germany just had the timing belt done as a precaution but i was told that 5 teeth were gone on it and that he had never seen an engine go 5 teeth without completely destroying the engine, and it showed all clear on diagnostics, but when i got it back it had seriously lost power about 30 kph but its grand only the power i miss, he told me that the cylinders are bent and thats why the power is gone and that i need an engine rebuild!!!!

Garages are lazy buggers at this time of year it must be said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 97 ✭✭lynnemc

What mike65, So they're not entitled to holidays or family time this time of the year like everyone else !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

They are, but cars break all the time and the garges tend to shut up shop for a good week which if you are the one on the roadside is a PITA to say the least. I imagine pleading would work often for a higher fee.

Whatever you do don’t go to a guy who business name is <SNIP> or something to that effect. He's a complete cowboy rip-off.
He's based in the Enniscorthy - Clonroche area.

Got my timing belt replaced buy him just over a month ago. Now my car won’t start and I looked at the ‘new’ timing belt and discovered it full of slits/tears down the middle of it!!!
    <SNIP>

Remember lads slanderous/defamatory comments will be removed. Your posts can land Boards.ie into legal trouble. Also, please only posts publicly available numbers fro businesses. Not home phone or mobile numbers please - if you wish to do that, do it over PM. :) Thanks.

Just to add to Sullys comments. We dont need people named here in a derogatory manner. We have all had bad experiences with various individuals and businesses but it would be more appropriate to take the matter up with the person/business concerned than to post about it on a discussion forum.

There are ways of getting your point across without naming in a negative fashion. A few of the posts have been tidied up so we can leave it at that now.

They fixed up my old car nice and handy after I banged it up in a minor scuffle with a bigger car.. but they went pretty downhill on me when I wanted to get another part fixed after I broke the mirror when passing a car with his full lights on. They never called me back.. and gave me the runaround for a few months. The guy that did the repair work the first time wasnt with them anymore.. so I dont know what the story was. I'd give them the benifit of doubt though, the repair-work they did for me was top-notch and cheaper than any other place out there.

I'd also give a strong recommendation to Pat Goff beside Havenwood.

Damien Carew is a great mechanic, he doesnt advertise and hes always out the door, hes down by witches lane.

Oh let me write this correctly before the PC brigade get me.

Eh he doesnt advertise and is out the door because or his good work it travels by word of mouth, thats what i meant by he doesnt advertise.

I saw another poster mentioned him here and went to him so they were happy enough, so was I

just bumping this thread as I am looking for someone reliable for an older car in waterford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,218 ✭✭✭Junior

What type of Older Car ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭Hifive

    http://witcheslanemotorworks.com/

Great local (Waterford) outfit who will take on an older car.
As you probably know, most garages don't want to know, if it doesn't connect to their diagnostic machine!!

Ask for Noel, (joint owner) or Bill, newish good mech who loves older stuff.
Noel used to trade under the name of Nokad (I think) and has a very good name among BMW folk

I had my 23yr old BMW with them last year, and they also gave me good advice on another old car I own.

    Mark.
