Thats a DSL modem + router. For Metro or Irish Broadband Breeze you need an ethernet only router with no built in DSL modem.

Metro should be fine for games. My Limerick pings are <50ms. We've used PC & PS2 online games.

These ones marked Cable/DSL will work with any ethernet Modem or an existing DSL Modem/Router in Bridge mode. There is no method at all of using an integrated DSL only Modem/Router as a router for ethernet Modem such as Breeze or Metro.

Digiweb are very good and I found their support excellent when I was with them.

    right, digiweb it is so.

im i correct in thinking that they are wireless with the reciever put onto the roof of the house or do they use a phone line.

i see they will provide you with a router themselves. is it wireless and is it any good.

    thanks again

Metro I don't think incudes a router. Digiweb FWA 3.5 does have a router, but didn't used to be WiFi.

Metro is a kind of Wireless (x3 frequency compared to typical wireless) and does go on roof with a coax cable to the indoor Modem.

No phone line, but a phone connection included, so you can transfer eircom number and cancel phone line saving about €26 a month.

    hi watty,

i seen from a previous post http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=57718470&postcount=5 that digiweb requires a DSL (Cable) router, when using dabs. when i filter this option, the one is was looking at above is listed.

do you know if it will be compatible.

    thanks

The one you listed appeared to be a DSL Modem + Router, thus won't work.
Dabs is VERY confusing. In reality there are:
1 :: ADSL Modems that include a Router. Router can't be used separately from ADSL modem, but modem usually can be used with Router disabled.
2 :: ethernet WAN routers than can be used with any ethernet Modem (cable, DSL, Wireless, Ripwave etc). Dabs calls these DSL/Cable Routers and Argos calls them Cable Routers.
3 :: Cable Modems that include a Router. The router can't be used separately without cable and only the cable operator can supply it. A self-bought one will not connect.

Any router can optionally include WiFi. A WiFi with one ethernet socket is usually NOT a router but an "Airpoint" to add WiFi to any LAN or Router, no matter if it already has WiFi or not!

Some Cable Modems can be configured by operator to allow more than one PC. This does not mean it's a router.

A router also usually implements a firewall and NAT so your LAN can use a private address range and thus only one ISP IP is needed for the WAN port of the router.

in terms of digiweb, what is the best way to set up wi-fi in my house. do i get them to install at my house 1st and then install an airpoint myself or will i need to have a device at hand while their engineer is there.

also can you point me to a suitable device because i'm confused about what is compatible or not.

    thanks

Scroll down and note it says "Modem None".

As long as it has no DSL modem built in, any router with WiFi will do.

    Etc..
Also Komplett.ie www.maplin.co.uk (and local shops).

If on DABs it says in spec "Modem None", then it's an ethernet router and fine.
Maplin & Argos call them Cable Routers. But they are not SPECIFICALLY for cable as they have no Modem.

Digiweb supply a Modem with an ethernet socket. It connects to any Ethernet Router (by one with built in WiFI). If the Router INCLUDES a modem, it's the wrong model and usally for DSL only.

It's not confusing. Only problem is the stupid descriptions by the retailers which IS confusing.

You can test the connection they install with an ethernet cable. Then add your router+ wifi later. An "Airpoint only" Wifi adaptor won't do.
