Also, is there any control over what rates a credit card company applies to your purchases or can they pretty much charge you whatever rate they feel like?

The rates change all the time. Any info you get (if you get any off the banks) may very well be incorrect an hour later.

Use xe.com/ucc as a decent guideline.

XE is currently showing GBP to EUR as 0.94396...

No chance any bank is going to give me the same rate...

BOI card services are a joke, they cant tell me the rate applied to cards because they dont have a currency converter..

    Update -

The purchase I enquired about was a £680, the total in Euro would be €825 including a 1.75% handling fee...

That means that for £680 you are charged €810 - exchange rate = 83.95%

    What a shower of bastards...

Having said that, the bloke on the phone sounded like a complete muppet...

Visa's corporate website gives a current (effective today) rate.

You need to know the fee your bank charges you on exchanges (if any) to get an accurate value though.
Can't seem to find a Mastercard equivalent though.

    [edit]
There doesn't seem to be one anywhere. I'd phone your card customer service as gerrycollins said, they should tell you.

I rang BOI about this before. I have a BOI Student Mastercard.

I was told that BOI don't set the rate, Mastercard do so BOI don't really come into it. I have looked around for Mastercard rates before and never found them but xe.com was suggested as a guide.

The last GBP charge to my BOI card was on the 11th of December and the rate I got was 0.8620 per euro. According to http://www.oanda.com/convert/fxhistory that's about 4 days behind the actual rate, which isn't bad.

I got £0.88 from mastercard last week when it was £0.90.

I think its usually about 2 cent less then what xe shows.

credit card is still the best method imo, I doubt you'll ever get better than 2% off interbank if you buy sterling from a bank, and you have the benefits of always having the right amount, up to 57 days credit, etc
