Has anyone any advice on these cars? I have noticed them to be cheap enough in UK now, 2.5k +. I knew of 3 people who had 2001 petrol models and they all had major and expensive electrical problems.

    How are the 2004 diesels?

There seems to be a lot of differing models / versions, Elegance, Dynamique etc. Any advice / recomendations on the differences between them?

    Hi,
I currently have a 1.6, petrol laguna 03. It is a very nice car to drive and
to look at (in my opinion) but thats where it stops. So far I have had to fix/replace

    1. A window regulator
    2. replace 3 coils
    3. a hole in a fuel return pipe (lucky this one didn't catch fire or something)
    4. tracking rods
    5. a water pump
    6. pressure sensor in one fo the wheels.
    7. hazard light switch
    8. electric mirrow adjusting switch.

Am currently looking to selling and my only critaria for a new car is that it has to be reliable, so I reckon I'm going to get a 2.2 deseil accord form the UK, it looks like I'll have one for about 12K (fingers crossd), now all I need todo it sell the Laguna.

Ahh the Laguna....the most towed car in Ireland, just behind the LandRover Freelander.

Flee as fast as you can, don't look back and get yourself a car with working electronics.

I would say that is going to be a challenge, at least the price will be quite low.

I also have an 03 petrol Laguna. Had to replace the battery and get a new starter motor and alternator pulley. The cable in one of the electric windows needs to be replaced too. Thats really only the major things.

Comfy car tho. Im not a car person tho so dont go by me!

I think most people here have summed it up pretty well.....

Dont bother with it. Spend an extra few pound and buy something decent.

you could buy a nice mondeo for about that price in the uk.would be a much better buy than a laguna. Dont have any personal experience but my friends father had an 03 one and it wasn't too bad but he still didnt buy another despite having driven renaults for donkeys

Good suggestion this. A mondeo is a much better option and a better car to drive and live with.

Nope, I know of a couple of trouble free ones. I'm looking at swapping my Xantia for a really nice 01 one my boss has for the last while (he buys and sells cars as a hobby). It hasnt a mark on it and everythign works as it should.

As for White wolfs list, only 1 and 3 are anythign like big problems that are reliability related. The throttle body thing is a minor issue and easy diy job to do. The key was presumably lost or broken as they can be recoded if thats the issue (even broken ones can be fixed but obviously a garage is going to want you to buy a new one). Most car keys are costly these days.

Without knowing mileage or whethe rit took a knock or anything theres no way to know why that needed replacing. I dont think Renault use any special type of low life cats compared to others so if it went prematurly I'm sure whoever makes them would be informed. "problem with window" and "somethign to do with the suspension " could be somethign or nothing o0r anything in between.

Rattles? I've had a coupele in various cars. A little investigation usually sorts them out.

Who sent up the "R" signal for Junkyard?

Who sent it up for you? :p

But as you say, some of those problems mentioned happen on any car, like the cat at around 100,000 miles and the window regulator of the drivers window when the drivers are heavy smokers :D

FWIW and to give a bit of balance, a neighbour had an '01 1.6 petrol for years without major problems and a colleague had two 1.6 petrols, neither had any major problems either

I never leave. In fact I was here keeping an eye in things till nearly 8 this morning. Just me and 6 guests on commuting and transport at around 5am was a bit wierd:)

So never forget, I'm ALWAYS watching.;)

Mine has a slight driveline vibration... I think because the previous owner hit a pothole and bent a 'something' in 'somewhere' along the driveline. I got it for free though, so y'know. Price of repair is the price of the car. I know the car though, and otherwise it's been fault-free since new.

If it's in decent nick, go for it. Though try get it cheap.

I know a good few mechanics who love Renaults! (To own and drive themselves)
Best piece of advice if buying Renault is only to buy a manual, cos if autobox/tiptronic versions go, to fix is more than the value of the car.

TBH I know a lot of people (mostly of the slightly older generation) that say that about all auto's. I think it's just general auto-ignorance.

As far as I'm aware, Renault auto's are no more expensive to fix than others ( I know a couple of main dealer mechanics).

Sorry Stekelly, but that advice came from a mechanic who is an independent Renault specialist. Me personally, I have no auto-ignorance, as I've driven Toyota and Mercedes autos for 7 years. My mechanic specifically told me never even think about buying a Renault auto.

A good chunk of mine comes from Renault main dealer mechanics with upwards of 25 years experience.

A good few of Renaults autoboxes over the years have been Nissan boxes so surely Nissan autos should be equally expensive to fix? (and troublesome no?)

All evidence points back to hearsay tbh. Sure I've lost counts of the amount of peopel who told me Renaults are ridiculous money to buy any parts for compared to other makes, which just isnt true.

I owned a Renault and I have never had as many problems ...... with mechanics!

My car was 10 years old and 100 000 miles. At this stage you can expect minor issues I assume. (unless Ford and Wolkswagen know something Renault doesn't know ...)

My exhaust fell off. Mechanic in Celbridge told me it was because the car was French. What a strange sense of humour. Well I assume it was humour even though the guy was not laughing nor smiling, because my car was the only French car in sight. All other cars being repaired at his place were not renaults or citroens ..

He still managed to do a half job and charge me a fortune. 2 months later, same problem. I go to quick fit near eastpoint(I worked there). 5 mn later, literally, my brand new exhaust falls off on the road on the Quays at rush hour!

Called the guy. He says: I think I know what is wrong unfortunately I cannot help you I don't do car towing.

AA helps me put it back together with a piece of wire. It was a temporary solution. I drove back to Celbridge where I live. The next day I go to a mechanic nearby so he can fix it for good. His answer: Mmm I have too much work, I'd rather you go back to quick fit.

hem hem ... the guy doesn't want my money and i have to drive all the way to quick fit in eastpoint.... Why should I complain.. The guy in quick fit did the job in the end ( I thought)

A few months later I had a prb with the exhaust again would you believe. I decide to avoid these charming people and try a new place : quick fit in Blanchardstown.

I leave the garage and notice a rattling noise. Since it was getting worse by the day, I bring it back. The guy says: Now "it should" be ok, the prb was that the exhaust wasnt properly fixed the first time .....

A couple of months later I go to a mechanic in Lucan (a good one this time) and he services my car. He noticed that a wrong plug has been fitted in my car by a previous mechanic....

Now this leads me to another 6 months after that. I go to the NCT centre, my Renault car was working like a charm. NCT guy fails me because of emissions. I go to a mechanic in Celbridge (not the same one) they make it so I pass the NCT .. Great I thought. I pass the NCT, a couple of weeks later the car wouldnt start.

I tow it to the last mechanic i went to. They charge me 148 euros for changing sensors. Literally 2 minutes after I drive off the engine was cutting out!! I drive it right back to him.

The car stayed there 2 months. I never saw my car again.

Anyway, here comes the conclusion: if you can do not buy a car. you will end up giving your money to these dishonest/incompetent people, it is a lot of hassle and not worth it. I since take the bus and for the first time in years, I am saving money. So even if the car you saw was cheap, it will still cost you in the end.

The problems mentioned in this forum have nothing to do with Renault or Laguna. They may have some known issues on some models/years but likewise for every manufacturers.
