i should imagine when word is spread about a town that wants every shop to open up in Town centre only or will let them open up shops in out of town retail parks but are dictated to on what they can sell with loads of exceptions to what they cannot sell because of some stupid environs plan (which i suppose was good in theory at the time) - can you blame people going, "stuff that , they are not making it easy for us to open up and start trading in Sligo and they dont seem very welcoming there and the existing business owners are very clicky of any competition" - then i suppose they think stuff that we will open up our business in any other town in the west/northwest but not Sligo!

I get the feeling a lot of people in Sligo are very against 'chains' whether it be UK chain stores or Irish chain stores) whether it be places like currys or Argos or whatever (I bet they have been in there and used them though since they have opened up!) - but the reality of it is that if you have some more decent large chain stores in Sligo (and not dictate specifically where they can and cannot be situated) not only will they be in a better position to pay the high rent and rates but they will bring in much more customers to Sligo (that go off to another town to find them shops) and then hopefully the smaller shop businesses in Sligo town will benefit from more customer footfall and benefit from it whethere it be customers on foot or driving around in their cars

    - They could, if done properly, reverse the situation and instead of people in Sligo travelling out to other Towns/Counties to go shopping an spend their money out of the area , then if Sligo done it right Sligo could Actually see people driving into Sligo from other areas / counties to do their shopping in Sligo! - but no, if everything closes down due to high rents/rates or not enough customers (or whatever reasons they are shutting down for) - then no-one in the end is going to want to come to Sligo to do their shopping (well apart from people who already live there I suppose and havent got transport to drive further afield)

talking of Parking spaces in the centre of Town what were the powers that be thinking of when they allowed the build of Johnston court shopping centre - without a requirement for an extra car park? - when they were building it I thought , ah right the side bit in the wine street car park is going to be an entrance for an underground car park for the shopping centre - but no, it seems to be access for delivery / storage only! so people expected to use the already crowded Tesco car park! - these days if there is not enough ground space (above ground) to put car parks near shops then you got to think out of the box and fit customer car parks Above or Below shopping centres or shops - I hope if ( and it dont look like its ever going to happen) that if they are going the build a big Tesco in the Town centre (wasnt their noise about one being built in the wine street car park more than once but it kept falling through or the developers went bust or something or couldnt get planning permission or something?) - well anyway if their is a big one to be built i hope they consider either underground car park for customers and staff or build one above it!

    It's only startin'.

I went into the Swag today for a hit and miss about 1pm. 3/4 of the eating tables had people scoffing and maybe 20 people in the bar area. Pity to see it going. A few of my daughter's friends work there. Looks like they'll be heading for the dole office soon. Great little country for a small business says Enda.

If it's closing because the rent is going up then he'll just open up somewhere else. If the place is making money, why wouldn't he?

Hard to know. We'll just have to wait and see what he does. I like the place. It's a pity to see it go.

If that's not it, it must be something similar. The place is consistently busy. No matter what day or time you go into the place there is always a crowd in there. I just can't see how is isn't making money there. Obviously, that's me on the outside looking in so I could be way off. You never know. I hope I'm right though as it's a nice spot.

I wonder how many people who are upset at Cross Sections closing ever shopped there?

Tbh, never shopped in it, browsed there a few times, and did find it a bit expensive, but I suppose some of their products may have been hard to get stuff, or unique, or top end, so the higher price was maybe understandable. It seemed to close quite quickly though, and was slightly disappointed that it seemed to close quite quickly with little warning as hoped I might have picked up something. You could say that, that would be at the expense of the owner, but still wish them well and hope they get back on their feet.

Still sad to see a place go, especially a unique/privately owned/specialist store.

I shopped there a few times - got a mothers day present and a few paintings for my grandparents. Even though the products were expensive, they had good quality stuff ! I will definitely miss it, it was such a lovely little shop!

But it wasn't me at the same time, I heard it from a few mates of mine and they know him well whereas I don't!

I heard that the whole of Sligo is closing down. Sick of the restrictions by the inbreds running the Chambers Of Commerce, Ireland has decided to withdraw from Sligo and leave it to them.

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night

But you put it on here, then you ask "did anyone ask Dale?", maybe you should have before posting.

I have seen him on the paper, I was just asking if anyone knew since there is too much rumours of different buildings closing down in Sligo. We might as well just not listen to what people say and let the businesses announce their closure instead. Unless if they see the building close and then we believe it's gone!

without knowing exactly what's going on, in general it's irresponsible to be posting things about business closing unless they actually are, they have suppliers who will hear these things which could cause unnecessary grief for a business that may or may not be doing just fine.

So you're saying we shouldn't discuss these sort of things, lest a potential supplier of said establishment reads something on a discussion forum and takes that as gospel, potentially damaging their clients business, or a supplier client relationship?

    I don't think so

It was on Wed 20th Jan just gone, a follow up to this one in June 2015, which went down well, look at the improvements made in the last 6 months.

Did anyone attend? Would love to have heard how it went.

    Guys,
just to let you know , that the Swagman Bar is NOT CLOSING !!!! well not anytime soon. Continuing this speculation will only serve to damage Dales business. And as of the comment about him never been there. Just because he is not behind the counter docent mean that he is not there. There is a lot more to running a bar than being behind the bar.

Really? how exactly can you quantify that idle speculation amongst a few people will damage his business? Is it time for tin foil hats now?

Any time I've ever been in the place he always seems to be there.

    Going back ON topic!

Xtra vision will be closed for good on wednesday. Tomorrow is the last day trading if I picked up the staff right today.

Oh, what's the reason? I did find the products more expensive than Gamestop though so that's probably why!

I was in town this afternoon (Wine St car park @1pm) and noticed Home Proud and the fish mongers next to them had the shutters down. I hope they are not closing down.
