Recommended book of the year from last night's Art's show on Radio 1?

One of the guests was raving about the best book she read this year was a book set in England with a Nigerian family. She siad it was the best book of 2008 by a mile and that it was sure to get nominated/win awards in 2009. I think the author's name was Cleeves or Cheeves. Can anyone remember the name of it
