Nacho novo was rumoured to be a target also

They just want a right winger but don't want to spend big until the Summer

He obviously isn't good enough but they are obviously desperate and could probably do a job for them in the short term..

Fcuk sake, now Messi will only be the 2nd best winger in the league.... :(:(

    I'd almost say it's a good signing.

Ignore Pennant's personality - he's fast, technically decent, and a right winger. Add to that, Liverpool don't want him. For 3 or 4 months worth of football, I can think of worse players to sign.

And anyway - whose going to sell their first choice winger to Real Madrid in the January window? I'm unaware of any right wingers outside a big club lighting up Europe this season really.

Edit: Maybe Ashley Young? At a club owned by a billionaire with designs on Europe. Not gonna happen.:P

Drenthe can do everything Pennant can and he's younger.

As others have said, I doubt Ramos is thinking "Ah, the final piece of the jigsaw".

He's capable. He's (relatively) cheap. They've a big injury crisis. For Real Madrid, spending £3m is probably equivalent to other clubs bringing in a player on loan.

Still a strange one though :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,473 ✭✭✭Adamcp898

They'll get someone on the cheap to keep them going in January and then in Summer they'll splash the cash at the impending wingers + Villa firesale at Valenica

This would be an awful signing. Long term, medium term or short term he is still a crap player and not Madrid standard

Also interested in Zokora I heard.

Fella's a clown imo. Right place right time for him at Sevilla I feel and I think Monchi needs to take a lot of credit for that clubs success.

I watched him week in week out at Spurs making ridiculous decisions and his opinions on players are absolutely bizarre. Ill give him one season max at Real.

-He got Levante promoted from the Segunda Division B
-Promoted Logroñés to the Primera Liga
-Promoted Rayo Vallecano to the Primera Liga
-After promoting Rayo Vallecano got them into the Uefa Cup
-Got them to the quarter finals of the Uefa cup
-Took over Betis and got them into the Uefa cup

Hardly a 'clown', sure Monchi and Del Nido were key in Sevilla's success, but Juande was fantastic for them, compare Juande's Sevilla to Jimenez's and you can see the difference in style/ attitude. It's funny to watch how uneducated the English media have shown themselves to be when dealing with Ramos. Now the man is a failure because he did sh*t at Tottenham. He is a top top quality manager and is one of the best knockout specialists there is. He has proved he is excellent for over 15 years, yet the English media judge him over 14 months? Joke tbh. Sure he was sh*t at Espanyol and Spurs, but he still won Tottenham their only trophy in how many decades?

The one thing I would say about he guy has shown himself to be a mercenary when he walked out on Seville. I thought it was horrible how he treated that club, moving to a worse team just because of money. I lost most my respect and love for the guy when he did that, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he is a fantastic manager.

Looking at it, it's not the worst signing in the world. Pennant is a fairly decent right winger, top 7 quality. How many of those are available this january for 3 million?

    Temp job until next season.

Counting right back from Feb 2008? Less than one decade so.

First trophy this decade, we won two in the 90s, three in the 80s, four in the 70s, five in the 60s.

Seems it's not just the English media in need of some education...;)

Back on topic, I though it was Mijatovic did the shopping at Real, not the head coach?

Good signing in my opinion. He doesn't get a look in at Pool because Benitez doesn't play that way.

3 million not a bit much though? He's out of contract in the summer.

A whole lot of Sevilla fans have little grá for him, while a whole lot of Spurs fans have a huge amount of respect for what he achieved in his short tenure.

Pennant would probably do quite well in Spain, really, I think he would, take him, go on, take him, please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭redout

If Real Madrid are foolish enough to offer a reasonable fee for Pennant then by all means Liverpool should accept it. But sure what Ramos is going to do with all these new signings when the injured players start to return is beyond me. VDV is already complaining about not getting games as it is. Loan moves could have been a better option in my opinion. Marca are saying the guy wants about €70,000 a week and Madrid are only offering €30,000 which is a bit low I suppose when compared to the salaries Madrid usually dish out. Either way I dont really care. I highly doubt he will be a success and will return home with his tail between his legs within 12-18 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭Idu

Did I not read that Pennant has turned down the move because they only offered him 30k a week?

Madrid have spent over €300 million on players in the last two and a half years. I am sure not many of you were aware of that. That is a huge sum and just shows that Madrid like to throw their money away. All they have seen on their return is two league titles which they were very fortunate to get considering the first one went down to the head to head record with Barca and the second was really because of Barca's crisis last season. No champions league challenge worth mentioning. Bottom line is that they are a club who just throw money at their problems and hope that does the trick.

I think he means that Madrid are expected to be challenging if not winning the La Liga and also challenge in the CL, which they obviously haven't the past few seasons, they have spent well and have done absolutely atrocious in Europe, they seem to be on the right path though, buying young talented players like Van Der Vaart, Huntleaar and Diarra.

madrid spent £300m? feckin hell. now i really hope liverpool play them off the park come feb.

if pennant goes to madrid ill eat a small hat. that said, it would be the funniest thing in football since Schteve mclaren's famous dutch interview

Can someone explain why Real Madrid are suddenly in the market for a right winger (Pennant, Valencia, Young). Has someone got injured? They have been playing with Robben and Drenthe all season - both naturally left, for sure, but why not patch this problem during last summer?

Or do they just love buying Arsenal youth castaways?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,527 ✭✭✭glenjamin

They wanted Adam Johnson off 'Boro aswell.

OK, so £20million for Diarra was a deal that more than raised a few eyebrows, but Pennant? Jermaine Pennant as a Real Madrid player? Even for that circus club, it's a mad one.

To answer your question, Yes Ramos is insane. Did you not watch Spurs when he was in charge? He had'nt a clue. Id give him 6 months at Real

Point being they are not making good decisions at board level and that some of the players they have bought are not up to much. The club has a lack of leadership and the people at the top of the club are out to look after number 1. I see that you mention happy. Well if you saw the scene's at the Real AGM several weeks ago where Calderon scraped a vote of no confidence and was barracked with calls to resign I think you would differ. The members of the club are far, far from happy with the on goings within the club.

A great example of a club who spent a similar amount or even a bit more was Chelsea. They won the league convincingly and made admirable progress in the Champions league. Now compare that to what Real Madrid have done and you see the difference. Just because you splash the cash does not mean it will solve your problems unless the right people are in place at the club.

Haven't any of you learned that the manager has no final say in transfers at Real Madrid? The transfers are mostly arranged by their director of football (Pedrag Mijatovic).

Yes like Pedrag Mijatovic even knew who Lassana Diarra and Jermaine Pennant were ! Mijatovic has the final say in all transfers. These two were recommended by Ramos. Just like he mentioned Zokora also.

I'm aware of that, but I'm saying that Mijatovic and the other 'chiefs' on the board would have agreed to the huge fee. I must admit that I was astonished by the price-tag for Diarra too, but he is on the French team and must be good. Pennant though? - I can't see that.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,879 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

tbh 3.5m is a very good price for Pennant. might not be a likeable guy and maybe wont be a huge success at Madrid but if they sold him 6mths down the line im almost 100% sure they wouldent lose money on him and after falling out with Rafa, Pennant probably has a better chance at getting a game with Real than Liverpool especially considering they have often played a LM at RM this year.

well regardless of whether or not they think it madrid have no divine right to challenge for the CLevery year. chelsea is a poor example to compare madrid to as they havent won the league in 3 seasons. they did win the league but while they were winning the legue they did not challenge for the CL actualy. it was the season before they won the league under mourinho where they challenged, knocked out by the gooners on the semis and then last season when they again did not win the league..whats ur point?? if anything its the exact same as madrid.

oh and madrid during the invincibles era surely is an example of when throwing money at a club can bring success and happiness. just because it is not working now doesnt make it a valid option!!
