Just read that he was shot last night by his mother's boyfriend and has died. Very sad.

Very sad, the guy who murdered him is nothing but a lowlife. http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/eilers-shot-dead-15598

Jeremy Williams of the IFL is another fighter who died this year. And there was the first recorded death due to an MMA fight this year too

    Sad stuff. RIP

Levens was good friends with Jeremy Williams. Bad year altogether. Sam Vasquez was the fighter who died.

He was just moving down to 205 which would have suited him IMO too.

There was? How would that work out legally? Would the opponent be charged?

That death was actually last year. Nobody was charged. Has a boxer ever been charged for the death of his opponent? I don't think so, I think once you sign the paper and everyone sticks to the rules then it's nobody's legal responsibility. The report on his death did mention something about him hitting a post that mightn't have had enough padding, so it wouldn't have been totally his opponent's fault if he was able to be charged

There was a death a few years prior to that Fozzy. Look up Douglas Dedge.

That was an unregulated event. The guy couldn't get licenced in the US because of his health problems, it wasn't like MMA was solely to blame

There were no regulated events at that time. Regulation in MMA is a new concept. He was still the first person to die in mixed martial arts. And yes, rumours have stated that he was not medically cleared to fight in the US.
