This forum is the best place I can think for this.

Let's say I wanted to get some gold or silver. Pretend I'm paranoid about the banks not functioning and I was something that'll be worth something no matter what. So I'm looking for gold or silver coins that are worth something because of their content, not rareity, such as Kruggerands. Is there anywhere in Dublin I can buy them?

You need to go directly to a bullion dealer. Search for them on Google. A quick search throws up these guys that appear to have offices in Dublin but I'm sure you'll find others:

P.S. It's quite volatile though. Gold and Silver have dropped over the last year which would seem odd as you'd imagine people would be investing their money in it because of the banking situation. Gold was over $1000 and Silver at around $14 about a year ago, now down to 860 and 10.70.

there are 2 coin shows in the RDS and there are normally a couple of decent traders down from the North, even better no paper trail:D
Piece of advice get a list of the major coins and work out the Euro value before you go, dont ignore half and quarter soverigns, even Victorian ones basically trade as bullion coins and are very nice imo
