how to register italian i phone?

have got one for my better half for christmas from a contact who got a pay as you go in italy. when i pop the irish sim it it is just asking me to register with i tunes. should i do this? i ve read here that this is not necessary but cant seem to get past this on the i tunes screen. is there any reason why i shouldn't just…
