Regular DNS errors; new router or ISP problem?

I get constant DNS errors (every day at least), very often my PS3 won't sign in to PSN. The laptop is sometimes unbelievably slow, like slow dial-up.
At the moment I have a Zyxel Prestige 600 Series modem and a Dell 2350 Router. They are both ancient.
Do I need to upgrade this hardware, and if so to what???

Unfortunatly you are not sharing with us which ISP you are using.

What you might give a try is use opendns servers rather than your ISP's DNS servers. You can find more info here: http://www.opendns.com/

I'm using opendns and I'm really happy as it's way better than what UPC is providing me.

    Sorry, it's BT.

    I knew it :(

BT DNS is indeed notorious , log into the zyzel ( 192.168.1.1) and insert the opendns servers in the DNS fields , dunno where .

Otherwise set them in the network connection on your pc instead of obtain dns servers automatically . These are in the tcpip settings . Leave obtain ip addresss automatically as is .

    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

So they deal with DNS from now on not BT's cacky servers .

I have a slight suspicion about http ' shaping' going on in there too. Do you use firefox?

If the DNS issue does resolve most issues then post back .

I have posted this before but I think it is worth mentioning again.
There is a better alternative to Opendns.

    Here is a link:

Basically there are 2 problems with Opendns:
    1) They route all your google queries through there server first.
It's bad that Google knows all about you but interception by yet another company for their own purposes is worse.
    2) If you enter a domain name that does not exist, they will return an ad page.

Try 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 as your DNS entries

Exactly .. not a problem if it's a browser doing the lookups, but it can confuse some applications no end, causing needlessly long time-outs.
