    +1

    In many cases, where one business closed another has moved in or is trying.
    Rainbow-->Kid clothes shop
    Finnegans --> Bank
    Lennons --> Another f'ing Bookies (too many of them imo)
    Brown St Bar --> casino (planning permission recently refused by CoCo)
    Easons --> gift shop

    Hopefully this trend will continue even if at a slower pace.
    that casino is in full swing in brown st bar, any time i have been walking past i have seen people coming and going during the day and evening. should they not have planning permission before thy open for business? but on a brighter note it is good to see that people still have spare cash to gamble!

    Spare Cash to Gamble?????
    I dont think so. People have very little spare cash. During the course of my work I do have oppertunity to speak to people that come out of the casino and one gentleman had not even got the price of a taxi hime.
    I know of another gentleman that is currently spending his wages every Thursday in the place.
    Not blaming the casino here but to think that there is SPARE cash floating around out there is......wrong
    People are trying to make a quick buck....which in a casino is impossible as we all know....

    Just saw this thread.

    I am the manager of the atlantis casino ( private members club )

    The quote that atlantis at Brown st is in FULL SWING is not correct.

    We are in operation in charlotte st and have not yet opened in Brown st. Yes our planning was refused and this is now in an appeal situation. We have been open now 4 years and the casino provides entertainment facilities to its members.

    Gambling in a casino is far safer for people than gambling at home via the internet as we have management staff who`s job it is to notice if a customer is getting in over his or her head, also we do not except credit cards and for anybody who believes they have a problem gambling we have a self exclusion form that they fill in and they are no longer permitted on the premises, or on the premises of any other casino that is within our association.

    The reason for our move to Brown st is that we will have far superior facilities for our patrons, also we want to open a restaurent within the casino. We had provisionally hired 14 new staff but with the planning rejected this has been put on hold. We currently provide 24 jobs in carlow town.

    Casinos in Ireland are in the process of being regulated at present, and we are putting forward a case that carlow should be considered for a licence, this in turn will see a great number of people visiting carlow from out of town for poker tournaments. this in turn has a knock on effect for hotels and restaurents.

    any questions please feel free to ask, or phone paul 086 052 0350

    i think i should clarify as to what i think alot of boardsie are getting at, we are not attacking any specific casino. but there has been a large increase in gambling in the last few months. many believing it to be a "quick buck" while on unemployment.

    i, myself, do not like gambling. dont mind people who have a game of poker at home or go to a casino, for a night out. but i think there are too many casinos atm in ireland.

    do you mind me asking how you police the "self exclusion policy" in your estiblisment and those of your association?

    thanks for your question.

    we police the exclusion policy as follows

    a member decides that Gambling for Him/her is no longer fun and is starting to become a problem, we will get the to fill out a form requesting self exclusion for our club and other clubs within our association (gaming and leisure association of Ireland) All our members must provide picture Id and aslo have there pic taken when becoming a member, we keep full file details on each member. We have a full time receptionist and if a member that has filled in a self exclusion form attempts to come in this information becomes immediatly available to our staff and the individual will be refused admission.

    Casinos should be fun, but when the fun stops casinos need to take ownership and we have a duty of care to our Guests.

    Please also check out the associations website www.glai.ie

    sorry for going off-topic, but how does the receptionist know at club a that member entering club a has filled out an self exclustion form at club b?

    We have notes on all members, therefore a warning message will appear on the copputer as the member tries to enter facility. They cannot enter under another persons name as there picture will not match

    Did we have a thread for business opening up in Carlow or was that post in this thread too?

    Anywho... I'm sure a mod will move my post if its in the wrong place.

    Florino's (Best Chips EVER!!!) has expanded a bit and now has a really nice seating area.
    I was in there yesterday but it doesn't seem to be in use yet. Looks like they're going to do something similiar to The Golden Grill.

    A new Asian take-away has also opened, its at the roundabout that I can never remember the name of, I think its Staplestown Rd Roundabout? Just down from Fast Eddie's at Shamrock Sq.

    They too seem to have a seating area for eating in.

    Can the thread title be altered to include businesses that have opened and closed in Carlow - dan/patrick is that possible.

    And yes florino's are the best chips in carlow, had them only 40 mins ago - life is good.

    I always call that roundabout hosey's roundabout becuase of the shop/post office thats's on the other corner. haven't used the takeaway yet.

    The Texas store up in Stawhall has closed recently also. Never been to it myself but a few people I know swore by it for household stuff.
