    Hi ppl,
I currently have ntl broadband. When i first got it everything was fine but now the wireless router is not working. It has been not working for a while now but i have ignored it cause I did not need it too much, But now i need it badly.
When I rang NTL they say they are not responsible for the wireless end of the broadband and they only supply the router as a gift(which in my opinion is bulls"£t as they have supplied now they need to back it up with support which I told them in not so nice words).

Anyway if there is anyone out there with the same problem that got it sorted could they please help, or anyone thats gifted with that sort of thing.

    Hope you's can help

    More info needed,

    make of router?
does it work when connected via cable?
can you access the config pages?
any error codes when it fails?

A screen grab of the config pages would be a great help.

Its Netgear-g router WGR614V9. It works fine when the cable is connected to the laptop. I've tried to access the router pages through http://192.168.0.1/ and http://192.168.1.1/ but it won't let me in at all.
Anything else that you need that might help??

explain what happens when you try to connect in more detail, if the router works when connected via cable to the laptop its not broken....just wrong settings in the wireless options

I have normal router thats working fine but this then goes to wireless router which is not working(think its the settings)when i bypass this Everthing regarding internet connection is working fine with ethernet cable connected directly from the router to the laptop.

Open a command prompt and run ipconfig /all, look for the default gateway, that should be the routers IP, you should be able to log in using that.

OK try the ipconfig /all, while you are connected by cable.

There should also be a section called

Why don't you have DHCP enabled?

If he posts the output from his ethernet convertor it should be.

  • Registered Users Posts: 309 ✭✭THEFRIDGE

    Maybe this is better.

ok, type in the defauly gateway into ur address bar on firefox or IE,access your router and see if your disabling wireless or something

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,864 ✭✭✭MunsterCycling

You may have MAC filtering turned on in the router as you have not got an IP from the DHCP server (Google is thy friend) and have a auto IP (169.254.x.x is an address space reserved for auto IP, kind of a fallback for when there is no DHCP server or Static IPs aren't set) but they aren't routable, that is you cannont connect to the net using an AUTO IP

Your Netgear 614 is a nice router, have one here as a spare, can you post the output of this

    using the cmd box:

    ipconfig /all > ipstats.txt

This will create a text file called ipstats.txt at the location of the prompt eg: c:\Users\Gar\ipstats.txt

Open this location in a window and open the file and paste the contents into a reply, we can go forward from there, also later use a cable to connect to the router until we sort the wifi issue

Confirm you have the NTL modem connected to the WAN port on the back of the Netgear?

It was in the same one it was in at the start when it was working it the one with the yellow inside

OK that is the WAN port.

Hmmm, lets try to get you hooked up to the Netgear via a cable and then do the same report as before and post up again.

The DHCP server on the Netgear is most likely turned off thus causing your problem. You will have to manually set the IP of your computer to a suitable IP in the same subnet as the router and then you can connect, eg 192.168.1.10 subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, the router default IP is 192.168.1.1 IIRC

sorry will I disconnect from the laptop and connect directly to the wireless router?

  • Registered Users Posts: 309 ✭✭THEFRIDGE

ok this is laptop disconnected and router connected to the modem just

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,864 ✭✭✭MunsterCycling

Connect Laptop to the router via a cable, do the report and then connect back to the NTL so you can go back online and post report, or do you have another machine you can post from?

Can you make those screen cpatures bigger coz they are tiny on my screen.

i will have your head wrecked ha ha but does it matter which port i use 1-4. Cable going from modem to router into yellow input and another cable going from port one to laptop

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,864 ✭✭✭MunsterCycling

    Nope, doesn't matter which port.

You may have to give it a few mins to do its thing before trying the report
