anyone had any luck using this? I use it over wifi and it works fine. but i get ridiculous amounts of lag (5-10 seconds) using it on 3G.

i only tried it on 3 does it work better on other networks?

Latency on 3G is too high to make VOIP usable. I have had some mixed results using SIP via Fring - somewhat better than using the Nokia client but not much better.

Other thing I've found about the native client is that it chews through battery life and even more so if your 3G coverage is borderline.

Happy new year to all at Boards!

Ask your voip provider to put the codec to G.729 and you will not get so much lag over 3g.

Hello I am just thinking of using http://www.truphone.com/nokia/

    http://sim4travel.com/

Its Voip but I must use a Nokia Handset or an expensive iPhone?

    http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=146170

    http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=146170

Apparently McDonalds Restaurants have free Wifi in selected restaurants

Thecloud provide wireless broadband hotspots in the UK
where are there decent wifi hotspots in Dublin?
    has Dublin Bus got any?

Why can't I use a cheap WiFi handset from Ebay.co.uk?

I have heard Mobile Phone Networks in Ireland block VOIP telephony due to loss off revenue is this true?

I was told get an Unlimited Data Allowance for my handset, 085 Meteor do 250 MB per month for €10.00 Euros provided your in contract Pay As Go is 99 cents per day is this the best deal?

I am new to this and want to make the right decision I do not want to fall for a marketing gimmick:)

    Thanks,

    John

Vodafone do, the rest don't AFAIK.

3 are hands down doing the best data deals for mobiles at present - €10 for 1GB and if you are doing VOIP you will use substantial data amounts per call.

While the codec change may help in some small way, it only means that you can push/pull more data per second as there is more compression - it doesn't mean that you will address the latency issues which are ones of timely delivery of packets.

Also, as I understand it, it would usually be up to the SIP client to negotiate the codec with the SIP server. I don't know if one can change the codec on the Noikia client but I doubt it as it's pretty basic You can use SIP with Fring who seem to have very good compression but once again you're going to run into latency.

Service providers will most likely try and default to the best codec to balance quality and throughput for non-mobile users who would be the majority though I suppose it can't hurt to ask them.

While I don't claim to be a VOIP guru I have tried this in quite a lot of differnt scenarios at this point and even in areas with full HSDPA reception I still experienced delays and echo problems that made 3G VOIP pretty much unusable. Low call quality and the adverse effect of having the client registered on battery life make this pretty impractical over 3G. Fine for wifi in terms of quality but keep your charger handy even then.

    Thanks for your reply.

I use Three.ie Hutchinson Telecom's service I have two otheir 3G Videophone calling phones while this feature is good its €00:33 cents per minute to another Three Network Mobile and €00:50 cents per minute for a video call to 085 Meteor Dublin area only availability during roll out testing and I think Vodaphone 087

Using Threes Mobile Skype to Skype Three Mobile testing it in the local Dublin area the sort was really gargled and distorted maybe it was this one off call however when you call the States for some reason its normally NOT so bad. could it be that Three are doing this deliberately ?

When I asked three did they support other VOIP programs besides Skype
    they said no?
So I should ask for a 1 GB Internet add on for my Three Handset?
plus I need to buy a different model Nokia that must be Unlocked for
    use with Truphone ? complicated:)

Three's Support say if there is anything wrong with Skype on their handsets its not their problem to contact them(Skype) as its "third party software"

I know with www.truphone.com they stipulate that you buy an "Unlocked Nokia" handset models specificied on their website

So basically is it worth investing in some Wi Fi only handset
www.ebay.co.uk search " Item number: 280306129995" Wi FI VOIP Phone
£17:99 Uk Sterling plus £9:00 for delivery?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280306129995&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:Watchlink:middle:uk

Would this work in McDonalds Free Wi Fi Spots ,free hotspots in Dublin not to mention the wireless WiFi spot at home

    http://www.skype.com/intl/en/allfeatures/wifiphones/

    http://www.skype.com/intl/en/allfeatures/accessories/

There is even a Wifi video phone pricey and you would need 2 of these to be any good:)

Working from from a Budget are Wi Fi only phones worth it?
or just a marketing man's dream cash people up for shoddy under performing products.?

Basically 3 G mobile phone networks VOIP is usuable BUT
OK on WiFi Hotspots like McDonalds but bring a spare battery.?

I guess if I do buy Wi Fi Phone I will pay by credit card stipulate in the sales contract they must be able to make quality international VOIP calls and have decent battery life that way
it will make it easier to reject the goods and get my money refunded.

    Regards,

    John
