Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I see nominations for Borderfox, Calina and KJT in the Sports Photography section, dont get me wrong the three of them have posted some stunning images and I have seen KJT up to his oxters in Liffey getting a shot, but are they sports photographers.

AFAIK they have posted pictures of one sport each, Border with his Horsey stuff (I say horsey cos i cant spell equestrian) Calina with her kite surfing and KJT with his Kayaking pics, my question do you have to shoot a variety of sports to be considered a sports photographer or indeed to recieve an award as being a good one.

I am not sure of the answer to this myself, and would appreciate your views!

One sport is enough IMO. Why not? One sport is as hard to shoot as five and those three a the hardest of any sports photography I have seen here, so niche, little or no start up advice and all that jazz

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Well, a sports photographer is a sports photographer - I reckon you could shoot one type of sport, or a hundred, and still call yourself one.

A gig photographer might just shoot rock gigs, he's still a gig photographer, a portrait photographer might just shoot pictures of naked, plastic, orange women, he's still a portrait photographer :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,263 ✭✭✭✭Borderfox

In the Horsey realm I shoot Showjumping, Dressage, Horse Racing, Polo. So its four out of the general Horsey sports. :)

I must do my nominations this evening...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭AnimalRights

So keith you get up in the morning get dressage, showjump to work being the extrovert you are and suck on a polo to calm you down as you wait for that special moment get that horseracing shot.
    Fergus was right you're just a 1 horseman. :p

The answer to that question is yes, actually. Why wouldn't we be?

Also, you forgot Paudie (surf shots and my hat tip although he's been quiet lately), Paddy@CIRL (motorsports), pete4130 (atb) all of whom have posted some outstanding work. If I were to choose a sports photographer for an award, as it happens, I probably would be looking at the three of them. Nothing against the other sports photographers on boards but they have produced some work which is head and shoulders over anything the rest of us can claim. I will see if I can dig out some posts with examples later on.

I may split this diversion to a thread of its own, actually, it could spawn an interesting debate about how you classify yourself as a photographer. I'll see if it goes any further.

Well I think it depends on the photographer really, I take boxing shots but I dont think it makes me a sports photographer, I dont think anyone else sees me as a sports photographer either as I wasnt mentioned at all :(:(:( my main aim is people, camera interaction, it can be a variety of things.

To me dodgy is a sports photographer, border is a sports photographer, kensutz, calina and many many more. But for someone like me who goes out and takes sports shots once a month or once every second month I would not see that as being a sports photographer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

Yeah but if your boxing shots - however infrequent - were better than anything the "regular" sports photographers shot...is it fair that you'd be over looked for that?

if your a photographer why put yourself in a box, if you take pictures of any sport your capable of being a "sports" photographer regardless of how infrequent or sport

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

You can call yourself anything you want. It's more a matter of what you have a passion for.

I tend to shoot sport more than anything else, but do also love wildlife, portrait and landscape photography.

As for how many sports, does that matter? I don't think so. Some of the very best international sports photographers tend to shoot only one sport. Billy Stickland of Inpho is a prime example. He has won many awards for his sports photography but now only covers rugby.
