Type 1 Diabetes and Motor Insurace

    Hi was just wondering if anyone can tell me if there is a heavy loading on Car/Motorbike insurance if you have Type 1 Diabetes. I was only diagnosed in early December Age 33 and need to start organising my licence and insurace.

    They must be told about the type 1 or they will just invalidate the cover in the event of you making a claim, but they are not actually allowed to load the insurance against you. Worth asking for two quotes and don't tell them about the diabetes in the first call.

    You are restricted by the license in the types of vehicles that you'll now be able to drive though but that only applies to lorries over a certain weight and vehicles with more than 9(?) passenger seats.

    make sure you go to your specialist regularly - it's difficult to get insurance if you can't provide a report from the last year or so - take it from me :)

    Hi,

    I was diagnosed only 2 years ago at 24 and was a provisional licence holder at the time. I know that Quinn, Hibernian and FBD do not load at all for it any more - they used to. And in general they shouldn't need a letter from your doctor - they may ask, but it's not too common. In general they just check to make sure that the driver's licencing authority know.

    I'm with FBD and i'm not loaded. I was with quinn before them and wasn't loaded then either.

    I have to get my licence renewed every 3 years though and I need to submit
    a letter from my doctor with the renewal.

    I think the Irish license doesn't require the 3 yearly renewal as they gave me full 10 year ones before, but I actually kept my UK one because they do keep checking up on you. Weird I know, but I'd like to keep the threat of them taking the license off me if I do become unstable enough hanging over me, where the Irish license application really didn't seem to care about the diabetes and I felt they gave it to me without asking enough questions.

    Although I don't think the DVLA have ever actually contacted the hospital about me as the renewal always seems to come back too quickly.

    Edit: The UK license is easier to carry around as well.

    I think it was because of my doctor that they gave me the three year licence. On the form that he has to fill out, he put 3 years. As far as i remember theres a check box for 10 years as well but he selected 3 years. My diabetes is well controlled at the moment but i think its fair enough that he just put 3 years as for all he knows I could go off the rails tomorrow!!

    So do most crowds look for the doctors letter? I'm with AA and they send me out a form to fill out and get signed by my doctor, difficulty for me is that I'm not sure what I am Diabetes came on in my early 30's, have type 1 antibodies but type two symtoms.

    In the event of a claim how do the insurance find out you are diabetic if you havent told them???:confused:

    for something like a prang etc, they probably won't find out, but in the event of a serious accident any medical report submitted in relation to your claim will say you are diabetic.
