Just got round to reading my Sunday Times (28/12/08) today and saw this headline on the front page of the Business Section. Here is a copy of the story, headline is a bit garbled. I couldn't see a thread about this already.

COMREG, the communications regulator, says it plans to order Eircom to slash by more than 90% the price the former state monopoly is allowed to charge rivals for access to its network.

Didn't this happen before except eircom said no and comreg pussied out?

They need to cut the charges for Exchange access, electricity, rackspace & etc too, the line rental is only one part.

This of course all should have happened BEFORE eircom was privatised. But that would have reduced the income for the Government.

    *sigh*
Comreg orders Eircom to cut prices, Eircom brings them to court, Comreg back down and they do it all again in a few months.

...and people on exchanges where they COULD move to cheaper and better providers, don't move and eircom do not change.

Sure aren't we lucky to have the phone at all?

So this is unlikely to see any real reductions in price in the near future?

In fairness - ComReg cut a lot of the ancillary charges in Oct 2008
