Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

We're planning on going to the states in the summer for 4 weeks. We're going to be in Vegas for the first two and planning on going to California for the other two. What are our options for accommodation for two weeks in California?

Where in California are you going? It's huge.

2 weeks in Vegas? I think after a long weekend you'll be struggling to overcome the boredom unless you're a hardcore gambler.

And what exactly do you mean by options? Hotels? Hostels? Camping? Or are you talking about cities? San Diego and LA are less than 6 hours away. San Francisco is 8-10 depending on speed. You'll find hostels in each of those cities. USA hostels are pretty good. Think they have one in SF as well.

I did 3 weeks last year....LA, yosemite national park, san diego, tijuana, san fran, new york, montreal ...... wanted to do more but ended out in hospital with a kidney stone so had to give back my car and use planes and trains - after a few days rest....so kinda ruined my plans to travel up the coastline.

theres so much to see/do ....... 3days is enough for vegas (unless you can afford to bankroll yourself for 2 weeks) .... I'd say go from LA up to san fran along the coast then drive to yosemite into death valley, then Vegas, san diego and back to LA up the coast again..... should take 3-4weeks...I'm sure theres probably tonnes of stuff you might want to see but I'd say 3days at any of the places that you really wanna see.

Yea 2 weeks in Vegas is just to long, I did 8 nights and although there is loads to see and lots of shows to goto it will eat away at your savings.
I would say 4 days max, pool by the day visit a diff casino or two every day and then gamble in the evenings or see a show.

We started in San Diego - ok but not much to do max 3 days unless you want a day in Mexico.
So then we drove up route 1 to LA stayed in Santa Monica for a few days seen LA.
Then coast road again upto Ventura/Monterey (Avoid santa Cruz bit of a dump unless you like to surf).

San Fran then is very cool place loads to see we even spent an extra week.

Plenty of Motel 6's on the way just google map there locations as some are out of the towns, USA hostel in San Fran was good and the YHA in san diego good too.

Ok done something similar last year spent a little bit longer - 6 weeks

I would really advise adding the extra 2 weeks and you really could see everything in california.

    This was my route

    San Francisco - 1 week

    Santa barbara - 1 week

    La - 1 week

    San diego / Tijuana - 1 week

    Vegas - 2 weeks

If you let me know what your plan/budget etc... is for california i might be able to advise places to stay things to see etc...

With regards to Vegas i think you will be fine with two weeks its just about enough any more is way to much i think and i was glad to be leaving at that stage.

We stayed in the monte carlo which i loved. 3 of us shared a room and the other 2 in the group ( a couple ) shared a room. We got poker room rate and it worked out at a little over $1300 for 14 nights between 3 of us i think.

Any more questions about Cali or vegas just ask and il do my best to help.

I would have to agree with everyone else here a few days is all you need in vegas. I would also put it at the end of your holiday as ull be wrecked after it.

San Diego is definatly worth a visit, you could go to the Zoo and Waterworld place, they are well worth seeing. In my opinion Tijuana is somewhere to be avoided. Newport/Huntington Beach is good for a visit to see how the rich folk live! LA and Hollywood is also worth a SHORT visit. Six Flags theme park is excellent if you like rollercoasters. Never got north enough to visit San Fran but supposed to be well worth a visit too.

In 2007 I was on a J1 in California and I went to Vegas too. As many have said, 3-4 days in Vegas is loads. Just go mad for that amount of time then call it a day. I stayed in the San Francisco area, and I thought it was a really great city, would recommend to anyone. If you can try to get to Yosemite National Park, lovely place.

I was in the states during the summer, i would go with.

    Las Vegas
Possibly my favourite place in the states, its basically a city that never sleeps. Theres something happening every hour of the day. Its get very hot and humid during the day so you dont get much done other than sunbathing. Hotels are huge and have something different going in on in each of them, could easily spend hours just walking around 1 hotel. Well worth visiting, could easily spend 5 or 6 days there, you'll never be bored.

    San francisco
Been here a number of times now, but just dont really understand the attraction of the place. It has some great attractions such as the golden gate bridge, alcatraz and chinatown, but gets boring fairly quick. Nice place for 3 days max.

    LA
Really enjoyed los angeles, theres so many famous things to see and do, such as universal studios, star home tours, going to a movie premiere and just strolling around beverly hills and hollywood boulevard. Enough to keep you busy for 4 or 5 days.

    San Diego
This pleace is known for the beach. Also has some world famous attractions such as seaworld, zoo and if your there in july theres always comic con, could easliy spend a week there just soaking up the sun.

    Tijuana
well worth a trip, not as dodgy as people make out, mexican people like irish people alot more than americans, so americans have a major fear of tijuana, but i've met some really friendly people down there. Well worth a day trip or two.

I love TJ. I went there most weekends for about 4 years. But i think most Americans fear of TJ is more to do with the severed heads that keep being found and the huge gun death rate. But that is all in the barrios and not in the center of TJ. A lot of people usually generalize an entire place by stuff that goes on in a small part of it.
