That was just one example of many. He also buys his own clothes and furniture from a charity shop, even though he's probably a millionaire!

The inaccuracies in the pump would mean that the actual amount of petrol you get could be 5c worth either way. Thats why I always put in 2c extra and I refuse to pay for it. Maybe I'm the stingey one

There's a petrol station near where I live. Just say you decide to fill your tank up with €20 worth of petrol and you hold the lever down slightly longer than you should and it adds up to €20.01. This guy would charge you the 1cent!

how many people use the pump a day?add up all those 1 cents, multiply it by 365 and thats approx how much money they lose by not charging for the one cents

Friend of mine went out with a guy while she was in college. He was working full time. She was renting a room in a house and he stayed over 4 - 5 nights a week. The others he went back to his Mammy who brought him hot chocolate in bed and did his laundry. Of course he contributed not so much as a pint of milk to either household. This is your typical round dodger guy. My friend brought him to meet her Dad over a few pints and had prepped him that it would be important to her Dad that he stood his round 'like a real man' :D. He forgot his wallet and she had to slip him money on the sly for his rounds.

Another time, for Christmas, she's gotten him a Playstation and let him know this well in advance to shame him into getting her a decent pressie. Christmas day he presents her with a (pathetic ) love poem on a sheet of torn copy paper, tea towels and a nagen of vodka. And low and behold when she went over to his Mam's a few days later the nagen of vodka she'd left there previously was missing.

Ah Hogzy, doing that is not being stingy at all. Cinemas have been ripping people off for decades now.
I never buy anything in the cinema now, as a matter of principle.

A lot of cinemas make more profit from snacks and drinks than from the actual ticket sales. Ireland is particularly bad for ripping people off with cinema snacks though. Dead right to buy them in a shop before you go in, that's what I do!

Lets face it. The technology is simple to regulate the amount of petrol you put into the car - but the garages refuse to use it - so if you intend to pay for €20 at the pump & go over a little, they are hoping you will keep going till you spend €30...

But last week, some guy put 10.05 worth of petrol into his car, came into the shop and handed me a fifty euro note. I asked him did he have the five cent on him and he said "Sorry sir, but I do not have a 5 cent coin handy!" so I replied "Ok, not a bother." and handed him back 39.95. Apparently since it was the first time he had ever experienced something like this, he became very offended and said that he would never return to this shop again. But as far as I am concerned, he can stick it up his ass because my logic dictates that if you are paying for ten euro worth of petrol with a 50 euro note, then you can obviously afford the five cent.

    Or something.

Cinemas more or less break even on ticket sales because of the distributors charges. Their profit is on the food/drink. Absolutely extortionate

i worked in a pub a few years ago and in the morning the same few fellas would be in for their usual couple of pints. it wouldn't be too busy so i'd be chatting away to them. about three or four mornings in a row the same fella came in. he'd sit at the bar, open his paper, order a pint and ask me the right time, then he'd wind on the watch. after a few mornings i said to him 'i reckon it could be time you changed the watch, its not the mae west is it?'
'no' he says, 'i pop out the winder every night to save the battery' ......then tapped his finger on the side of his nose a couple of times, winked at me and was back into his paper

    Re: The Couples Drinks thing

Me and herself do that, but only if we're with other couples.

Round is costing more, but comes round each way more often. I buy her drinks, my mates buy the GFs drinks, just the way of things. If we're not with other couples, we stand to ourselves. Not because we don't want to get into rounds, but simply to avoid the "Oh your one person thing." But we will make this known before we start buying drinks.

I wouldn't class that as stingy.

The lad that paid for everything on CC after pocketing the cash AND tips is not stingy, he's a thief. Accost him. Burn his house. Belittle his hairstyle.

Let me see, stingy people i know...

I know a chap (used to live with him) that would only buy manky diet snack food so that we wouldn't eat it on him, but he'd happily tuck into our full fat stuff. That and he was a fat f**k anyway.

Nope, thats about it. I know thrifty (never thought I'd use that word) and money wise people, but no stingy people.

I know a guy that used to walk around picking up empty cans. I just used to think he was weird. Then he used the cans to buy a car and trailer, granted it was a junker Nova saloon, about 15 years ago. Still has it. Uses the car and trailer to collect more cans and transport them now. Don't think its stingy though.

Guy in my job is really mean, theres been loads of incidents but this one was the worst.
There was a meal in a conference room one in day in aid of a chinese orphanage, all chinese food etc and so u give what u can at the end and the money goes to the charity, anyway, we had that and later on he was like " oh i never ate my sandwich, ah sure il have it tomorrow", which was a saturday, so instead of throwing away the manky looking tuna sandwich he would keep it and have it on the saturday!! Yuck! Plus i dont think he gave anything to the charity even after eating a big plate of food!!

Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh is fantastic! We'd often mute the TV and carry the radio through to listen to the commentery from it instead, no problems with understanding him no matter what part of the country we were from! The TV commentators are dull, whereas Mícheál has such energy for the game and seems to know EVERYTHING about every player! We're talking encyclopedic knowledge of every player in the countrys entire career (inc childhood!). There'll never be another GAA commentator like him, so appreciate and enjoy his commentery!

It's not a case of the garages refusing to use it. Automatic pumps are illegal in this country. Unless you're talking about the ones where you can just set a cap on the amount spent and then manually pump until it's reached. That would be handy.

That's not stingy, that's normal  I'd sure eat my sandwich if it was there and I hadn't eaten it the day before. It's only one day.

Can't remember where I heard it originally. It's comes up on the Motors forum a few times. Here's a thread that covers it and quotes the relevant legislation: http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055219311
    43. (1) A stop, catch or similar device shall not be provided on a pump hose nozzle of a petroleum Class I dispensing pump which is designed to keep the nozzle valve open to permit delivery of petroleum without manual pressure unless—
( a ) the pump is operated at all times by an authorised person.
( b ) the nozzle is provided with a suitable and efficient automatic shut-off device to prevent spillage which may result from a splash-back occurrence or obstruction in or overfilling of a fuel tank of a vehicle or container, and the minimum flow-rate to operate the shut-off device does not exceed one-half of the flow-rate for which the retaining latch is set,
( c ) in the event of the nozzle falling out of the filling-pipe of a vehicle, the operating lever of the nozzle valve is automatically released from the retaining latch or device upon contact of the nozzle with the vehicle or the ground,
( d ) the flow of petroleum is stopped immediately in the event of the nozzle falling out of the filling-pipe of a vehicle, and
( e ) suitable means are provided to prevent so far as is practicable the displacement or detachment (other than by manual movement) of the nozzle in or from the filling-pipe of a vehicle during the delivery of petroleum to the fuel tank.

So they aren't entirely illegal but most forecourt setups wouldn't allow for them. Some people put the petrol cap in between the trigger and trigger guard which can make it automatically pump while they do whatever else they have to do but that's dangerous imo. Putting in a limit on how much petrol you want before shutoff would probably encourage more people to do that.

I think there are crossed wires here about "automatic" pumps.

    There are two types,
one which will pump a predetermined amount of fuel before shutting down and those that stop pumping when the tank is full and have the clip fitted in the trigger to allow you to pump without holding the trigger.

We were renting a house but not all the rooms in it. When we got home from work there was a guy bricking up the doorway of one of those rooms. Then the landlady tried to sell us the bags of wood that were in the room. The house had 15/25Watt bulbs, you couldn't even read standing under the bulb had to sit at the window and use the street light. The bathroom floor was made of chipboard, not OSB or anything waterproof. After a while the two locked rooms were opened up. We took one look and closed them again. Rusty bed frames with no mattresses. The saucepans were nearly rusted through.

On holiday in Peru. There were 6 Australians in the group with us. Some guides guys carried our backpacks and helped us out for days. We were knackered and we werent even carrying our bags. When it came to paying at the end we turned around and the 6 Australians are gone.

Met them in a hostel later and asked them for their share and they said - wait for it - "we bought one of them a bottle of water yesterday." They wouldnt pay up.

Couple of years ago my brother met some ausies on holiday and as the ausies never miss an opportinity to get someones address so they can freeload later, they got his address. So last summer he got a call form 2 of them. they more or less invited themselves over to our parents house for 2 weeks. They were driven around, fed, brought to the pub (where they didnt buy anything) and then were gone. Didnt even buy a teabag for my parents.

Last story : Mary Hearney once tried to steal money from pensioners who had been charged in the wrong for staying in nursing homes.
