I think you're right. Look at that piece about "twigging" today. That's not really what it means, is it? I think he was re-running the earlier conversation to make his part in it look a little more innocent.

The reality was he was making crude jokes over the head of a woman who was worried about her daughter. Today he pretended that his motive was concern - that he was pointing out real dangers. To do this he had to change the meaning of what he said.

There's not much you can do about "snowballing", as the definition is widely known - but does he seriously assert that this is a likely danger for a fourteen-year-old Irish girl? Something that her mother needed to be warned about?

There's nothing you can do about twigging, except pretend it means something else. The explanation of twigging he gave today was considerably toned down from the reality, which is presumably what he was joking about a couple of days ago.

This is breathtakingly dishonest, if I'm right, but it also means he's rattled enough to cover his tracks.

Of course, I may be completely wrong. What does anyone think? Is "twigging" ever used to mean fingering someone on a dancefloor? I can't find a single reference to it, but my porno-slang search skillls are weak.

Hands up if I'm wrong. It just strikes me as the only possibly reason for him to revisit the conversation today from a decidedly different angle.

I dont know what twigging is, ive never heard of it before today but surely no one in the history of the human species has ever done what your link suggests!

Humans do some pretty strange things (said Meeja, hiding the oven-glove full of lard and marbles) but I presume you're right. These slang terms dont develop because there is a need for them in the real world of sexual activity. They crop up when teenage boys try to gross each other out, or outdo each other in hipness.

Why is there a thread about this?

Why is there a thread about this

it's the radio forum. He's on the radio. Please read the charter, particularly the bit about bad language and personal abuse.

I have the car radio tuned to 2FM by default on the morning school run, so I inevitably catch the start of the Gerry Ryan show after the 9am news. I like the review of the papers, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised this morning when he focused on the "news" and brushed over such things as the ladies in bikinis with moustaches, leaving us to find out for ourselves if we're really interested (which I'm not, so I neither know nor care what that particular story is about).
I think the next section of the show was good; callers recounting their ongoing bad experiences with credit, particularly a certain 4-letter credit card company. He let the callers recount their stories with minimal interruption, he had callers with good experiences to balance the mainly bad, and he appeared to know the precise moment to wish each one of them luck and move on to the next when the fresh information had dried up. One criticism is that he could perhaps have suggested to the poor lady whose car was repossessed that she might have a case against the original lender, but that's just my opinion.
My point is that I think Ryan is capable of good radio, which makes it all the more tragic when he descends into the sort of prurient, indulgent and exploitative nonsense for which he's become notorious. As a previous poster has already eloquently pointed out, the show earlier in the week where his response to a lady caller who was obviously, genuinely concerned - maybe even distressed - about her daughter "meeting" boys was "wait til she discovers twigging and snowballing"... well, that was disgraceful. Shame on you Gerry.

He was on this morning about Ryan Tubridy writing a letter to himself when he was sixteen. He says that if he had to write to himself when he was sixteen it take a few foolscap pages. I think Gerry likes to protray himself himself as an interesting and complex person. Lets look at the facts. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, hung around with Charlie Haugheys kids, failed/unfinish law course, public service job for the last twenty one years, got fat at the taxpayers expense. It does'nt seem that interesting to me. Nor does it seem interesting to anyone else judging by his book sales.

You should read his book..its crammed to bursting with the most facile and boring minutae of his life that he finds very interesting indeed.
He talks as if he's some sort of multimillionaire rock God who has creative juices coursing through his veins and people actually give a damn about his opinions on property developers and his favourite "fine dining" experience.

He also likes to think he has one of the big knobs.
Remember him interviewing Trinny n Suzanna, when apropos of nothing he shouted
"I have a very large penis, hur hur hur hur....."
Cue stunned silence from the said ladies.

"My talent is to imbue a project with much more significance and theatricallity than it actually deserves. This gives a sort of incandescence to it that makes things that are not all that bright shine very brightly.I can bring that to the party. But,like it says in Bladerunner, the light that burns twice as brightly, burns twice as fast.
    How brightly i have shone."

    That,dear friends,is a quote from his book..i jest not.

The man is a caricature of himself.
My hatred of him has now subsided into admiration of his insanity.

He could have at least taken the time to double check his Bladerunner quote and get it right.

I can feel myself travelling in the same direction. There is an edge of determined lunacy about him that he doesn't seem aware of. The bit of his brain that should hold a self-image seems to have been replaced with a sacred heart, some Churchill speeches, a picture of Robert Mitchum and a huge chocolate eclair.

"When they started publicising the salaries of the top earners in RTE i didnt give a shiit.
I know that some of my colleagues were very sensitive about it.
For the most part i've always been fairly celebratory about how much i earn.
    In fact,i dont earn enough.
I think i should earn at least as much as Pat Kenny"

Another insight into the mind of this "man of the people".

That's disgusting. I'd like to think he was joking but that would be stretching it.

For all my attempts to inject some positivity of G. Ryan's broadcasting skills into this thread...
    I stand corrected.

Am I the only one who enjoys the show for all the reasons people hate it on here..?

The boasting, the self absorbed musings, the constant sleazy overtones and perving (twigging and snowballing??!!)
The humiliation of callers to the show (getting people to sing the monkey peeing song instead of talking about what actually they rang in for)

Fuckin hilarious:D Oh and I love that the fat fucker is presenting a show on how to lose weight.
    Complete lack of self awareness.

    Legend.
