Hi,hi the car is a 1998 5 series 528i manual. I've been thinking of this lately as im getting old and i like my comfort. I test drove a 530i auto recently and really liked the the drive but I don't want to change car now as I've spent a lot on it this past year and it's worth feck all. Is this an easy thing for a specialist to do. Are they're many parts needed. I'd be hoping I would source the parts from a good breaker.

I'd imagine it would be far cheaper to swap cars, it's an expensive job and the car will probably be worth less afterwards. Talk to unkel about a swap against his 740i.;)

tbh, it's not going to be economic to do it. There may be differences in all sorts of things, from mounts, to exhausts, definately in wiring. Pedal boxes, internal trim, etc etc.

A car of that age (no diss intended !), simply wouldn't be worth it after doing it - I'd imagine if you pay someone to do it, you're talking thousands of €€€.

A better idea is to just change the car - a 530i of similar vintage will also be worth feck all, as no-one wants 3.0 cars, either. It'd work out cheaper to sell your car (even at peanut money..), and buy a 530.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

No I would say its easier to go from Auto to manual but manual to auto is very very difficult as you would need to fit a TCM and all the associated wiring the rear diff could be different too so not really an option unless you had a donor car even then it could be more trouble than its worth !

Probably the best thing to do in that case is to start googling - i'm sure somebody somewhere has done it already and they'd be in a much better position to tell you exactly what's involved. In the meantime, you could give AC Car Sales a call, they're a dublin BMW specialist with a good reputation, perhaps they could advise you further. My main worry would be starting a project like that and finding out halfway through that it's a lot more complicated than anticipated.
