    Hello

Wanna get a t.v up north mainly for watching dvds but would like to be able to get the 4 irish channels.

Just saw a notice in an ad for a t.v. in richersounds PLEASE NOTE: this is a U.K. model and will not tune analogue T.V. signals in the Republic of Ireland,

Will any t.v. that I buy up north be able to pick up the 4 irish stations with a plug in aerial?

    Thanks

some will, others wont. you need to check the specs and see if it has a uhf/vhf analogue tuner

1st of all! you need to know what type of aerial you have on the roof!

There are 2 types in Ireland - UHF & VHF

The UK have UHF TV's only, Most of the masts here are UHF. There are still a few VHF masts around still though, i know of one in Gort, Co Galway.

This is a UHF aerial (above)

And this is a VHF aerial (Above)

So if you have a VHF aerial it wont work with the TV from the north (but you can always use an irish VCR to tune into your VHF channels and then connect the VCR to the tv because all the VCR outputs are UHF)

    Hope this helps!

Yeah, if you knew what transmitter you were receiving from, it'd be easier to get an answer.

The only channels on VHF terrestrially are RTE1 and RTE2 (and as said, only a few transmitters left which still use VHF for RTE1/2). TV3 and TG4 have never used VHF. Analogue cable areas may also use VHF.
