Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Our house has just been plastered and we are now looking at getting a painter to do the inside of the house,
Ive got one quote so far of €120 (cash-job) per day for a 2800sq ft two storey house, he reckons though that he would have it done in less than 2 weeks, we will supply the paint ourselves
Is €120 a day cash a good price? He comes highly recommended

He isn't been over paid for that but be careful about how long he can drag the job out for. Being paid by the day there isn't much incentive to get the job done quick. The slower he is the more he gets paid

good rate but i wouldnt like payin by the day.offer him in the area of €1400 if he claims to have it done in 2 weeks.
what exactly are you getting done?i worked with a painter for years and he'd be chargin nearly 3 times as much.absolute workaholic perfectionist though, savage end product

    Thanks for the replies,
Ya I was thinking that the daily rate could get messy if its dragged out,
This guy is a retired painting contractor in his 50s who does cash jobs yet is still by all accounts a very very good worker,
Im thinking about making an him an offer for the job to avoid being charged a daily rate, maybe around €1000 to see how he will negotiate

Or you could arrange the day rate but also arrange a set time frame for completion. This would have to be arranged on paper but is something that is becoming more and more popular. If you expect it in 10 days ask for 9 and that gives you a day to bargain with.

God be with the days when you got a real deal for CASH

He is still charging you €15 per hour for CASH taking account of an 8 hour day whish even then he more than lightly wont work.

I don't know any good painters who will charge less than €200 per day and that is at a cash rate.

That's not a bad rate. This man is a skilled worker. think what rate you would want to receive for a days work. Most tradesmen on the books employed would expect to earn about 200 per day. A guy working for himself paying his own stamp and holiday pay and keeping his own books etc would expect more.
A Lot of unskilled laborers get more than this.

They dont get More than €15 an hour into their hands no matter who they are or where they work. The craft rate for the construction industry at present is €18.60 per hour which has to be taxed. They may well get paid €200 per day but that is before tax not after. There are very few (if any) legitimate painters in the construction industry pulling in €1000 a week after tax.

€200 a day for cash is off the wall when compared to the taxable agreed construction rates.

Comparing self-employed rates to employee rates is not a good comparison.

    365 days a year.

    52 weeks of the year

    52 x 35 hours @ €18.60

    Totals €33,852

Now lets break it down further

    52 weeks

260 of those are week days.

20 (or more) days are holidays

    11 are bank holidays

That leaves 229 days of productivity (leaving out sick days and grannies funerals:D)

    229 x 7 = 1603hrs in a year

    €33,852 / 1603hrs = €21.11

This is before an employer makes any money from a job.

Get a fixed price for the job to ensure he doesnt drag the arse out of it...
