Audi A6 2.0 TD Issues

    Audi A6 2.0 TD 2005 62.5k miles

    Car is ticking over fine (about 900 RPM) & driving fine but when ticking over the gearstick vibrates and I can feel vibration when sitting in the drivers seat.

    Told this is a flywheel problem and that this needs replacing which includes a new clutch. Does this sound right? How much to get this done?

    When getting the above job done was advised to get the timing belt done at the same time as a lot of the parts will be out. Does this sound right? How much to get this done?

    What you have been told so far all sounds reasonable. Your timing belt would be about due now anyway and it does make more sense to do it all together.

    But... Dual mass flywheels are expensive. Probably looking at €1.5k for the flywheel and clutch kit! I'd maybe get a second opinion before going ahead with it, unless you are very sure of the garage or mechanic. It could be as simple as an engine or gearbox mount.

    The timing belt aspect is a pill you're going to have to swallow regardless.

    Sorry for your troubles! Hopefully someone with more Audi/VAG specific knowledge will come along with better news for you.

    Actually a quick google suggests you're probably right. I thought it was an Audi that I heard a horror story about where somebody had bought a 2nd hand car and ended up paying half as much again for a DMF replacement.

    I had to replace mine just over a year ago, and an OEM one was €1000, and a spurious one was still €600 or so. Different brand of car though.

    Pricey what car was it?

    It was a BMW 320d (e46). I did a bit of looking around as well, and even the spurious ones seemed to be pretty pricey. It was a painful repair bill, but it was like a new car after though.

    If I said i'd been quoted €1,700 to supply & fit both the flywheel, clutch and timing belt in an official Audi garage does that sound right?

    That's about what I paid for a new clutch and flywheel, but not even in a main dealer so going purely on my experience, it sounds OK.

    I would say that would be alright, as far as I know. The timing belt on the 1.9 TDI is a huge job (front bumper, panel, rad etc to come off to get at it), but the 2.0 might be different.
    To do the flywheel and cluch is a big job, no matter what car it is. It is heavy work. And as said before, parts aren't cheap.
    I'd say you are looking at more for labour than parts, but that is the nature of the beast.
    Unless you can get an Indo mechanic that will stand over the work, I'd say that should be ok.

    Get a quote from Jetstar in DunLaoighire for price purposes, even if you're not in Dublin. They're Audi specialists and perform contract work for audi dealerships. They did the t-belt on my da's A6.

    Also remember that any good independant mechanic (ask on here for recommendations) should be able to perform this work and his hourly labour rate will be a lot less than an audi dealer. Also clutch packs are made by only a few companies (sachs) and not by vehicle manufacturers so a spurious part may indeed be the same kit as the OEM part.

    'fraid so, now way is DMF for a VAG anything like that cheap.

    I've just scrapped a perfectly good 02 Mazda 2.0 diesel over a b/end and DMF problem - 1.1k for a DMF for that one......

    Tip: for big job like that, a garage outside Dublin will be much cheaper. Pick one near a rail line and it'll be easy to got to/from. eur 40/hr rates down here, and a train ticket may be a lot less than the rates in Dublin...........
