Where on 4fm have they a decent 80s show?

eg. Smiths, Cure, Talking Heads etc?

There seems no new wave. There is a massive market for good quality 80s music.

It seems to be stuck in the 70s.

    I give 4fm 6 months - If they don't improve programming.

Hey how long did you think Newstalk would get away with Moncreiff?

    I totally agree.

It seems to me that 4FM is by and large a 60s and 70s station. Mark Byrne was clearly out of his depth playing 70s music, he should be specialising in 80s, thats his forte.

They seem to be largely overlooking the 80s music, particularly to the early 80s electronica (electric), New Romantic, New Wave, 2 Tone, anything on Mute records etc etc. They need a solid presenter who knows his/her stuff to do this.

As I've said elsewhere there's just too much talk on 4FM weekdays from 6am til 7pm, so they will have to seriouls revise their programming because this, amoungst other things (not least financial), will lead to their demise with a year or so.

Each of the applicant for the service researched their audience which was the over 45's. While they did apply for a music licence they did note that their was need for a largely news/chat based service competiting with Radio One.

I am guessing most on here aren't in the target market.

I'm in the target market I guess - but I certainly dont want to hear wall to wall of any genre and a good mix is always welcome- that said I'm extremely eclectic in my musical tastes and as an older Dad with you children my listening spectrum for radio is very broad. I'm surprised however that they dont have a "Dad Rock" type program in the schedule and some of the presenters just seem to play their favourites from the play list. In general the daytime presenters seem to know their stuff - dont get to hear much of Jimmy Grealy however but he was always a dab hand at the presenting going back yonks to his days in Radio 1. My only grouch is with Mr. McGuirk why the flock does'nt he let his guests speak - there was a poor sod on from the teachers union yesterday and they poor guy got about 2 words in during a 5 minute interview - that was just before I hit the off button.

I haven't listened to McGurk much but on Radio 1 he was a good presenter. Good columnist as well.

Do Today FM do a "Dad Rock" show they used to a few years ago.

What are their late night presenters like?

4FMs role is to appeal to over 45's (by which, presumably, it means anyone over 45 with money to spend, i.e. pre-retirement), challenge RTE Radio 1 and imitate BBC Radio 2. I think it does reasonably well on all fronts, being a little less serious for news and a more music oriented than RTE 1, having variety of music output and personality driven shows like BBC Radio 2, and playing a range of music that would appeal to 45-60 year olds. That includes a broad range of music that was aimed at teens in the sixties and seventies, and middle of the road since. Other posters have tried to define the 'era' from which 4FM should select music, but its not that simple, there is contemporary music aimed at over 45s being released all the time - Michael Buble, Shania Twain, Elton John, all these acts could be said to be actively targetting over 45s with new music, and so all are valid selections for 4FM. What you wouldn't expect to hear is the latest indie band, trip and bass, rap or grunge music, for example.

McGurk's show is fine, the only problem I have with the show is its just more of the same - The Right Hook, Matt Cooper and Drivetime. Same news, same contributors ,same obligatory wacky story......etc.....etc

And the same could be said of Damien Kiberd.

No they haven't had a Dad Rock program in a long time - I think Ian Noctor used to present that when it was on - someone else took over briefly from him when he left the station and the program was eventually substituted with Alison Curtis "Last Splash" indie rock program. Cant say I know much about Today FM's nightime progs - used to listen to Tom Dunne when he was on and Donal Dineen an odd time

Is there anyway of getting this station on a stand alone internet radio?

You mean via Reciva software on this sort of thing

    http://www.mrgadget.com.au/uploaded_images/Asus_internet_radio-704787.gif

If so then yes, its on their data base.

Yes thats it.i have a Logik set i tried scanning for 4FM but nothing came up!
I see it listed on the Reciva website but the stream doesnt work!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Just checked and Reciva says station has failed stream test.

I've added it to My Stations list so will see if it appears.

4FM are in the course of rolling out the promised listen again feature on www.4fm.ie

Should you wish to re listen to an interview or catch up with a show you missed visit the relevant presenter page where the replay launch button is located.

80'S music, as opposed to music for the 80 year olds!
The remit for this station at it's launch was that it would cater for an OVER 45 audience. That means that the MINIMUM age that would be catered for would by 45 years old, presumably going up to 90 and beyond.So....music from the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's perhaps????
What 75 year old wants to hear Aztec Camera FFS?
Another missed opportunity to broadcast DIFFERENT music.
It's just the same old pap.

If you think a radio station in Dublin is going to survive by playing 1920s music to 85 year olds you really haven't got even the slightest idea of how it all works my friend.

All I gotta say is that if they're stupid enough to put Jim Kenny in charge of anything other than filling the toilet roll holder when it empties, they're gonna fall flat on they're arse.

It would seem to me that all of your posts on this site are in this thread, about this guy. If you've something to say, then by all means say it, and the mods will judge whether it's fair comment, or just you slagging off someone for reasons unknown.

"Behind-the-hand" comments and vague accusations are not allowed.

I love it too. The very best of music from the 60's to the 90's from what I have heard so far. I haven't yet reached their target market of over 45's but am tuning in a lot. Well done so far 4fm

They seemed to be well pleased with their 1% in the ratings that were released about 2 weeks ago. I like Gareth O'Callaghan and Mark Byrne in the evenings plays a very eclectic mix. One thing missing that was mentioned in a few posts here and on other forums is the lack of a classic or "dad" rock programme.

I'm enjoying 4fm. Gareth O'Callaghan is a breath of fresh air in the morning (and yes, I'm aware how ironic that is given that he's very much an old-hand).
I could go either way on Tom McGuirk, but he does a decent interview.

Not a fan of the morning guy (9-12), although it's music rich so at least it makes a change from all the chat going on then.

4fm makes for a welcome change from the usual claptrap mono-eclectric rubbish churned out by the other national stations. They play so many golden oldies i had not heard in years, and the mix is very diverse - yesterday i heard Sinead O'Connor, Roxy Music and The Kinks back to back.

But I'm puzzled as to why the target audience is 45+ ?? Seeing as they play plenty 80s and 90s music, anyone from their mid-20s upwards is the real target market?

Yes, 4FM itself is a breath of fresh air with its mixture of music and chat. The "morning guy (9-12)" is normally one Jimmy Greeley - ex-RTE (nearly every station on radio and TV) and ex-98FM. I know that the Head of Music Gerry Stevens has been standing in for Jimmy whilst he is on holidays.

    Re another comment:
I would say the mix of music does appeal to the older age group - they don't just listen to oldies all the time you know.

Which is sort of a point I made at the start of 4FM. The playlist seems to have changed a bit (and it needed to) since then.

Good to hear the web stream sounding good now. It was poor, as in unprocessed, at the start.

The licence was awarded by the BCI on the basis that their brief was to broadcast to a target market of over 45's - me for example.

However as everyone knows peoples tastes in music are very diverse - mine is anyway and I'll listen to Spin 103 if they're playing something I like :D

So while they know - no doubt from their market research that they have listeners from outside their target markets they have to adhere to their licence conditions.

Why does 4fm advertise itself as a national station when it is only available in several counties and a small part of surrounding areas?

4FM,as part of their remit, agreed to feature specialist music shows weeknights 9 to 10.00pm.The BCI like some diversity after all it seems and now that RTE Radio 1 seem to have pulled their weeknight specialist shows it's good to have somewhere to go other than online.
