Going by the prices when it was 10% off, I'd say there are very few bargains there at 20% off.

even in the uk stores there would be very few items with more than 20% off, just like with the woolies closing down sale

I thought in the Woolies sale they were practically giving the stuff away. It seemed that way on the news when they were reporting it, but that was probably just the last day.

If halving the price of goods meant the items were been sold below trade price, wouldn't it be easier for the liquidator just to sell in bulk to other stores or web sites?

sold the irish branches? to who? and since when?

Was in Athlone Branch - they are offering:

20% off DVD, Blue Ray etc
    20% off CD
    20% off Games
    30% off Books
    30% off T-shirts

Did not see consoles or accesories marked down.

Rang Kilkenny store (056) 7750126 and the 20% sale is on but does not include hardware or consoles. I wanted a PS3. No joy there then!

exactly, there is only so low you can go. I expect the markup on consoles is small.

I also expect the likes of HMV would happily accept just a few % less than they have to pay suppliers.

They could even be buying stuff themselves on a limited time sale or return basis, sort of like newsagents do with papers.

Thats pretty good value, hope the selection on offer is similar to Xmas.
Maybe worth a trip to Cork city centre after all.

Was over in liffey valley nothing caught my eye. 80GB PS3 was about the only thing that looked good to me but i already have one.

The staff look a bit disheartened so i'd wait for the 30% and 50% sale if i were you. Personally i'd say its coming soon.

    • Close Encounters Of The Third Kind: 30th anniversary edition - 15.98
    In Limerick today.

has that been confirmed? I thought they were still in talks with HMV about only keeping a few of the stores open.

It's another of those clearout scams, every thing reduced half price yeah right, fine didn't look at blu-ray.
Soparros Zavvi:29.99 -40 ish xtravision: 29:99-34:99 depend on season
    "24" S1 Zavvi: €28:99 xtravision:24:99
Planet of the apes 6-DVD: Zavvi "clearout price" €18, HMV €14:99
    Fraiser S10 Zavvi €54:99, Xtravision €34:99

Fine there are a few DVD's n Boxset n cds that are one or two eruo cheaper, but nothing to take the day of work for.
O some DVD n' Cds was 3for€25 now €6:99 each so saving €1.3 roll out the champane

There maybe some good stuff but shop around, I saved €6 by not buying in Zavvi. From the looks of it this "sale" will be going on for all year. Also I found it hard to build up the motivation to buy something for these theifs, they took peoples money put it into there pocket and then says no your vochers arn't worth the paper its written on.

Just wasted a morning going down to that shop, at least I went to HMV (which I dislike but better the devil you know than the theif you don't)

I'm not happy with the current voucher situation either, but that's not the fault of the staff in the stores who don't know what their future holds.

I don't visit the city centre very often and never knew that Virgin had "become" Zavvi. Was on a mission before Xmas to find a DVD for my wifes niece, all the shops were packed, dropped into Zavvi, no staff on the floor to ask was about to exit "stage left" when one of the staff members noticed me from behind the sales counter (long Q) he asked was I alright, I enquired about my DVD, he left the counter got the disk and brought me to the top of the Q to pay. Very decent guy and I instantly became a fan of Zavvi. Really feel sorry for staff who may loose their jobs. This sales guy wasn't some student on seasonal work either. (Cork Store).

350 for the 80GB one in the window. Not sure exactly how good this is seems really cheap to me though after what i paid for mine last year.

    was in blanch store today
the 2 blu-rays for 30 euro was being removed and 19.99 stickers were being put on the covers so you are actually 2 euro more in the sale when you include the 20% discount.
but then they had the pirates of the caribbean box set on blu-ray for 63 (i think) but it worked out at 50 after the discount which is good value
they were selling dr who dvds for 30 euro but hmv have these at 13 normally
buts thats the madness of pricing that always has been virgin/zavvi

Cheers for that Dublinstiofán. It's not the best price, but no doubt cheaper than what you paid for it last year; if it was well before Christmas.

That thread in Bargain Alerts about a PS3 40 GB with GT5 Prologue for €230 has me expecting prices similar to this, however unrealistic, from other stores' sales. I guess I’ll just keep looking around.

To the guy looking for Mass Effect. Saw it for €12 im game brand new. Might be worth checking out. This was in Mahon Point in Cork by the way.

I was in the dundrum Zavvi there, 20% off everything bar consoles and ipods. Not much really that i could see that i'd like. There still seems to be the two for 30 on blu-rays but it really only covers pretty mediocre titles, though there are a few good ones in there. Works out at 24 for 2 in the end, which is good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭CyberWaste

Like I predicted, the sale is nothing great, dvds all the same price as before, and no amazing deals I could see. FAR cheaper to buy online. Disappointed.

€600? Your jaw probably hit the floor when you saw it for €350. I saw it in Game for €399.99 with 3 games; Resistance in box, Mirror's Edge and another game I can't remember.

Same as all the ones mentioned above, 20% off most stuff barring hardware.
    50% off vinyl.

I didn't see anything I'd consider to be a major bargain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,739 ✭✭✭Jello

Was in Dundrum earlier, they had a few good deals, nothing amazing. Got Cloverfield, Assassination of Jesse James, The Bourne Ultimatum and 28 Weeks Later all on DVD for €25 which I was happy with. Was disappointed with their Blu-Ray selection though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,899 ✭✭✭grimm2005

    was in dundrum store earlier.
30% off all cds, dvds and blurays
50% off all clothes, books, posters and vinyl
    20% off all hardware (Consoles)
It said 30% off excludes games but I still got it off bioshock and 2100 ms points (€30 in total)

80gb PS3's are €280 if anyones interested, didn't even mention xbox so i guess theyre sold out of them.

got no country for old men on blu ray for €14 and a guns n roses tshirt for €5 aswell as the games above.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,045 ✭✭✭Rev. Kitchen

Was in limerick Zavvi today got a few deals, the marked prices are nothing like what you pay i got Dexter season 1 marked as 35 cost 18, the blue rays are marked at 19.99 but after the mark down are 14 seems silly not to put a sign saying 13.99 as the 20 euro price mark kept putting me off ( even though i know in my head its 14 weird i know :D) Mighty boosh t shirt for 6.

To the guy looking for Mass Effect. Saw it for €12 im game brand new. Might be worth checking out. This was in Mahon Point in Cork by the way.

picked it up in zavvi for 19 which isnt too bad cheers for the tip anyway

That 20% of hardware seems to apply to controllers also. PS3 dualshock3 controller down from €60 to €32. Wii consoles were €192, PS3 €280 as was mentioned. Zavii in Liffey Valley is where I saw those.

Didn't think much of the DVD sale or blue ray. Probably more off than was marked but still nothing you probably couldn't get cheaper online.

My friend just bought a PS3 in the Cork Zavvi for 280.
30% of ALL HARDWARE according to him. Said people were leaving with multiple consoles.

No more PS3s left in that shop (Patrick Street, Cork) though. I bought one last week for 400 and all lol

Theyve been 39.99 in Zavvi for the last few months, and went down to 36 euro after christmas there so it should be 39.99/36 30% off :(

No wonder they are going out of business..

Although game do seem to be selling the same controllers for €60 so it still seems a bit of a saving.

Sale is now 30% off DVD's, CD's, Books, just after being in the one in kilkenny.

I love these sales as we, the consumers who were screwed over for so long, get to take advantage of great prices. I'm well aware of the reasoning behind such sales, as seen in Zavvi, but my post isn't to start a debate on the recession.

Moving on, €280 for a PS3 in Zavvi. Does anybody know whether that is the 40 GB or 80 GB model and does it come with any games and/or accessories?

EDIT: After speaking to Zavvi in Liffey Valley over the phone, they advised they have no more PS3s in stock and won't be getting anymore stock in; surprise, surprise.

80gb with moterstream 2 for 280 in killkanny

Cheers for that thenewbigguy. I'm going to see if I can pick one up in one of the other Zavvi stores.
