should they not be held in safes or similar then, where they would not be acessible to unwanted visitors.

yes they are required to be held in a gun safe and as far as i know anything above .22 will require an alarm on the house. the safe must be bolted to concrete floor and wall and not visible from a downstairs window...but the OP didnt make clear if the stolen gun was licenced or not

Semi-automatic pistols are completely legal. Despite all the fuss over handguns being used in crimes, the Gardai have no data which suggests that legally owned handguns which have been stolen pose a serious threat. The vast majority of firearms used in criminal matters are brought in illegally. Check out the Shooting forum for more info

I dont own a Pistol nor do I have any plans on owning a Pistol but
I do love my Rifle. I dont hunt or kill anything, I enjoy shooting at
    paper targets only.

From a firearms owners point of view we constantly
get flack in the media. Every time a Crime is committed that involves a gun
the Media and Political gaze falls on legal sporting fire arms owners.

The Fact that the average Joe Soap public does not even know that
There are legally licensed Pistols in Ireland shows just how little trouble, cause for panic, alarm and danger to public safety that they cause.

The Media and the Politicians constantly report Gun Crime and
in the same breath drop lines about Legally held pistols in Ireland which
have nothing to do with Criminal Gangs ground around shooting each other.
They get their Big Bad Black Semi-Automatic Sigs and Glocks in with their
drug shipments they dont bother their arse going to the Gardai to Licence them
now do they. I think at the time (I'd need to check my facts to be sure) in the
70's before the ban there was rougly 1500 Licensed pistols, and today in 2009
there are roughly 1800 Licensed pistols....were not sure where all the
scaremongering about huge upsurging gun culture is coming from
when the Newspapers start printing their stories.

BTW Semi Automatic only means that the Gun Fires a Single Shot with
each trigger pull. It does not mean that it sprays things out like Rambo with
a machinegun on full automatic as the Papers would have you think.

There is currently an impending Pistol Ban being implemented here
by one Mr. Ahern who seems to think that somehow by Banning Pistols
in Ireland that somehow solve Gangland Gun Crime.

Firstly Pistols can only be used for Target Shooting only, they
cannot be used for Hunting or Personal Protection etc.

For someone to legally licence a Pistol in Ireland they have to go
through quite a lot of bother, expense and torture with the powers that be
to enjoy the sport of shooting.

You cant have a criminal record.
    There are background checks done.
Your medical records could in theory be made available
in case you had any past issues with mental health.
You get a visit from your Crime prevention officer for a house inspection.
You need a monitored alarm such as Eircom phone watch.
You need a Gun safe mounted to concrete wall and floor.
You need a separate alarm sensor on your safe thats On even when
the rest of your house alarm is off.
You need to be a member of a Club which can costs hundreds of Euro a year.
You need extensive safety training before your let shoot.
pistols are dismantled, vital parts stored away from the master safe, in
a secondary safe all pistols stored correctly in this manner make it extremely difficult to steal pistols. Most Criminals that want to obtain a pistol can get one a hell of a lot
    easier than targeting someones home.

In Ireland up til the 70's there were licensed pistols. During the times
of the Northern Ireland Troubles a decision was made to Ban them supposedly
for a period of a month where all pistol owners needed to surrender their pistols.
The Month came and went and the Pistols ended up being seized and stored
for over 30 years until a few years back where there was a court case where somebody
won a case to get a Pistol Licensed.

There has been no evidence that any licensed pistol in Ireland has ever been used
in Crime. There have been some reports that some have been stolen I think
there was a number of 27 over the last few years but it was not clear
if any were used in crimes. Out of that 27 it is also not made
clear if they were actually Pistols that were stolen from Licensed owners
that were members of the public. Other statistics include the likes of
Humane Killers that are used in Meat Processing Plants, starter and blank firing
pistols, and I've even seen as far as I can recollect was it CS/Tear Gas canister
labelled as a firearm. Paint Ball markers are also considered firearms so if there
was one of them stolen it would also could be included in statistics.

Mikey "right lads, gonna go rob some post offices, im gonna need me a shooter"
Jonny "better make sure you register it"
Mikey"sh1te yeah, i wouldnt want to get caught with no licence for the ting!"
Jonny"Might as well get ur name and address engraved on the side too, that way, everyone will know who it belongs to."
Mikey "Good plan. Maybe when I dispose of it after a shootin or two, if they find it, they can return it to me, so I can use it again."

registered guns are not used in crime. Banning them is the most blatent evidence that our politicians are reactionary useless fools.
