Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

As Anouilh suggested, it would be nice to have a thread where we can post pictures taken by our beloved 50mm lenses.
Please feel free to specify make (Canon, Nikkor, Pentax, others) and other details.

I could go on forever, my 2 fav lenses are the 50mm 1.4 and the 24-105L, but since I got the 5D II I'm using the 50mm so much more in tandem with the fantastic ISO....

You appear to like your 50mm as much as your 24-70 with them 200 pics you've posted. :p

It's only 6 more than yourself, and I've three different 50mm's, so it's only fair ;)

And yes, I do like it as much as my 24-70 :)

Should we create one of these for a wide range of lenses, and link them from the FAQ's?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,263 ✭✭✭✭Borderfox

Good idea, similar to Canon photography on the net forums

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

Well, we could link this one from FAQ sticky. But I wouldn't expect doing something similar for all lenses. Just use tags on Flickr.
I have created the thread after realising that we really recommend nifty-fifty very often and that could be very helpful to show people, who consider that basic lense, what is possible to do with it. Especially if they consider upgrading from kit-lense to nifty.
    Just my opinion.

Yeah maybe not all lenses, but the ones that are always recommended
    Cheap telephoto:Sigma 70-300 APO DG
    Sports lens:Canon 70-200
    Wide Angle:10-20

Alot of users on here use these lenses and would mean people asking questions could see the lenses capabilities

After looking at Paddy's and Sasar's shots it really does come down to the photographer 99% and not the gear.

I have been thinking about buying a 50mm prime, but the problem is that I have a Nikon D40.

They list this new lens on their website - AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G - which they say has an inbuilt motor. As I'm still learning, can someone tell me if this lens would autofocus with the D40 body?

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I think that I've answered my own question - it will work, but it's quite pricey. Anyone know of any other lens manufacturers whose 50mm primes would AF with the D40?

    Sigma have released a 50mm 1.4, but I don't know if it'll AF or not I'm afraid!

If all went to all, you could buy an old school 50mm off eBay for about 40 quid, including P&P, and just go for the manual focus?

    Some technical insight here:

    http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7593_102-0.html?forumID=58&threadID=260799&messageID=2567084

It has been explained to me how a 50mm prime acts as an 80mm due to the crop factor in my Digital Rebel sensor.

Does this mean that I would do better with a 30mm prime?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Not nessicarily better - If you want the 50mm equiv field of view, then, yes, the 30 is the way to go, but otherwise, you're getting a cheap 80mm!

Fwiw, Sigma do a fantastic 30mm 1.4 - I loved mine 'til I upgraded to full frame :)
