Would it not have been a better idea to let her see its more serious before moving in?

Now she has to get use to two things rather then one imho

Well it absolutely would have been but circumstances (relating to a long term illness) meant it was not possible without scaring the life out of the child. This would have been ideal but now we are trying to figure out how best to move on from where we are now....
