Rent before commencent of lease

Can a landlord force a tenant to pay rent before the lease has commenced. I was forced to pay in order to secure the property but then due to unforseen circumstances I would have pulled out before the lease began. I payed rent until xmas and now want out but they want the rent due for the remainder of the lease. Its money…
