Just going off on a tangent for a moment...

I wonder how many posters here have managed to analyse the popularity of their photos on the Internet. I have various statistics trackers on my blogs and often I'm surprised when what seems to me an ordinary photo becomes very popoular. Some of my personal favourites get totally ignored.

I chatted about this some time back on The Lounge:

    http://ww2.techfocus.net/showthread.php?t=14996

Has anybody managed to work out what themes are popular?
Does popularity change with the seasons?
Are viewers more likely to enjoy looking at photos that have a particularly colour range?

I half remember it being discussed here; something along the lines of a flower balancing on a kitten ballanced on a baby will have the highest hits?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭Anouilh

I suppose that anything cute with large eyes would fit the bill.

Sculpture, on the other hand, could be better represented. You find it everywhere but it is often seen as a specialist interest.

If you have the data, I can run it through stata for you and see what the results are.

    If you own a Iphone...

    An iphone app (for $1.99)
Question: What’s the difference between a Polaroid picture and an iPhone?

Answer: If you shake the iPhone, it actually does something.

This was one of the Laws of Nature, as immutable as the Snake-Oil Law (aka. the Second Law of Thermodynamics). Until now, that is: Shakeit is an iPhone App from Nick Sayes which combines the slow-developing, whacked-out colors of the Polaroid with the shake-tastic abilities of the iPhone. The result is a photo that actually does develop faster if you “shake it like a Polaroid picture”.

Nick’s application takes photos from the iPhone’s camera (or on the Touch, from the picture library) and turns them into facsimiles of old instant film pictures. The photos slowly fade into view and come in three flavors, replicating famous instant emulsions. The applications is $2, and there’s also an ad-supported lite version with a single Polaroid film-type that outputs at a lower resolution.

Stats are truly my weak point, as evidenced in this:

    82071.jpg

I find Technorati is useful for keeping track of Flickr trends and it is interesting to see that every time another blogger references one's blog, it adds to authority:

    http://technorati.com/people/technorati/Anouilh

The tracker for Flickr gives stats for average daily hits:

    http://linuxinside.org/flickr/?nsid=77969956@N00

There are various other trackers that I tried out, but mostly Google Analytics is the most comprehensive.

It is odd to see that a rather dull photo of woolly lavender got more hits than dramatic landscapes or portraits, which I think are better photos.

I would be very interested to hear more about Stata.
I have contact with a business person who needs to work on SEO and statistics and I joined the Irish Webmaster Forum to try to learn more.

It's all a bit puzzling, I have to admit.

Thanks :D I did just that, fell off a wall and ended up in James' A&E.. indeed! I should point out everyone else was climbing over the wall too, but they were all 20 and I'm... not.

If you have a data file (.txt, .csv, .xls etc) I can poke around and see if I can make find any trends there.
Multinomial models should be suitable for this kind of work.

No hassle at all. If you have some data files I can see if there are any trends and you can see just how vague economists can be about predictions!

Now I'm really in trouble. I'm not quite sure what a data file is and which ones would be useful here...

I don't know if others here use the Frappr Map system. You make your individual map of the World, upload the code to your blog and it tracks visits to the page, though not details of what was viewed:

    http://www.frappr.com/?a=constellation_map&mapid=137439627722&s=stats

It's a nice system because members can leave comments on one another's maps and it gives a sense of belonging to a World community:

    http://www.frappr.com/?a=constellation_map&mapid=137439627722

You can also upload photos to your own site.

The statistics only remain available for a month, however.

I'll give a brief rundown if you want - sorry for dragging the off topic thread on topic! ;)

    Econometrics 101!!

Bascially, I can run a discrete choice model which is based on two variables:
Dependent variable: coded as 1 or 0, and takes the value 1 if the photo is viewed and 0 if it is not
Explanatory Variable: again coded as 1 or 0 but these variables will attempt to yield explanatory factors for the image. For example, if the image were a black and white landscape then the model could be:

    Viewed(1) = Constant (This has to be here) + Colour (0) + Black and White (1) + Nightscape (0) + Landscape(1)

This is then done for all images and in the end you can get the probabilities associated with each explanatory variable. However, for me to do this, I need the views and some basic attributes of the images.

I'll certainly have to work on this.

Can you track data here on Boards.ie?

For instance, would it be possible to embed a tracking code into a photo like this one:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=58929268&postcount=36

and work out the viewing and downloading patterns?

Nope - I had a chat with an admin about that. The software is there, but it takes a a lot of resources. Maybe later on I think.

This has catapulted me back to First Arts/Science maths class, where I could be heard sobbing into a hanky...

Here is a photo that had an influx of sudden hits when it was uploaded:

    Here are "More Properties":

Here is the photo on my cookery blog:

I hope this is along the lines of useful data making information.

Good chance I am in the wrong place here, but I cannot find a more relevant forum. Could someone wither point me in the right direction, or indulge me on this.

if any of you are good at photoshop, can you change the following

    kaka-i-belong-to-jesus1.jpg

    to, I Belong To Franco.

Childish I realise but it is for the greater good of a wind up, and I have no clue how to do it.

    Thanks in advance :)

    Totally.

Mind you I'm still recovering from the shock of actually seeing 30 seconds of Dr Phil yesterday when NTL connected up my cable TV in my new gaff.
