Sincere apologies if this has been asked before, I did do some searches but didn't come up with anything.

I need to get some work done on my '01 VW Passat and was wondering if someone could recommend a dealer? The reason being I need to get the following fixed:
    • The factory fitted alarm system is malfunctioning and currently won't disarm and stop going off.
    • It's a 1.9tdi, and the turbo cuts out after 50mph and won't come back until turning off and starting again.
    • A normal service.

    Thanks!

To be honest, with work like that, in a main VW dealer the price will be huge. The cost of using the diagnostics, and the labour charge for actually trying to diagnose the problem could me massive. I'd look for a reputable indy to do work like that. Where are you based?

Edit: Just read under your username, afraid i won't be able to help up that direction:o

Sounds like a electrical which if it is, is normally time consuming and could be costly in labour. If you know anyone in the trade with a vag-com get them to see if your car is showing up any faults.

Argh. I had feared it would cost a fortune to get this kind of stuff fixed. :\

If anyone knows of an independent garage in North Dublin (Swords, Malahide, Portmarnock) that has VW diagnostic gear, let me know!

    Thanks for the replies!

There's Jetstar in Dun Laoghaire, but they may be a bit far from you. For the alarm, you could try Hamiltons auto electricians, just off Camden St.

Jetstar again...Ger knows his onions with the diesels.

Indeed! Found a thread there describing what might be the source of the alarm problem; a blocked water run-off in the battery housing.

    Thanks again for the recommendations!

Maybe try a dealer just across the border. I read a thread in Consumer Issues I think, of someone getting a price for time belt replacement. Nearly €800 here and almost £200 up there. I don't think it was Volkswagen but I'm sure all the dealers are the same. I'd be interested in the price comparison. I'm due for the TB replacement soon on my Passat.

Good idea flanzer, but it looks like I might not need a main dealer after all!

I followed this guide, and found that the battery (and other stuff) compartment was half full with water(!) and low and behold, the drain-holes were both blocked with gunk.

I'm guessing(hoping) this explains the non-stop alarm. After all the feedback on going to a main dealer, I think I'll be getting the service and turbo problem done by a normal mechanic.

    Thanks all!
