Just wondering has anyone got any views on how far I should walk with my 5 month old boxer. Got him only recently and as he's a rescue I didn't know his vax history so I got him done again and this Saturday will be his first safe day to go out so I'm wondering about the distance he can handle.

I have a 3 year old boxador as well and we would normally do an hour's brisk walk per walk twice a day, was thinking I'd take him on one of those to start.

Ah, well done for giving him a home. As frustrating as it is, I wouldn't take him out for an hour at a time yet, he will probably wear himself out playing with your other dog anyway. I'd say short walks a couple of times a day, 15-20 minutes so that his bones can develop slowly and properly.

An hour a day is far too much for him at the moment. A Boxer's growth plates don't fuse until about 18 months old. The rule of thumb until then is 5 minutes per month of age, so at the moment you shouldn't be walking him for more than 25 minutes per day.

Oh, and kudos to you for rescuing!

When my boxer was a pup she would just flop down when she didn't want to walk anymore, maybe your dog will let you know whne he's had enough??

In any case, let him play with your other dog as much as possible.

Our boxer was essentially reared with an older beagle and they would spend the day playing together. It did wonders for the dogs development, physically and socially, and by all accounts she seemed to love it!!!

Yeah, I had heard about the bone fusing stuff which is why I asked here - the 5 minutes for each month rule sounds about right to me just watching him play naturally and how long he goes for. The boxador is very playful herself so they have really great fun together.

As for pics - can you really handle the cuteness? Its been a feckin' Hallmark moment every 5 minutes since I got him.

    OK, you have been warned....

Oh yeah and I've seen the flopping down behavour with another boxer pup we used to meet in the park last summer - down on his belly, legs all akimbo and wouldn't budge but this was more I think with not wanting to leave the park than tiredness in that case.

    OMIGOD HES BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

    HOW could somebody abandon him????!!!

With blue eyes like that I HOPE you have called him Frank;)

Well technically he wasn't abandoned - original owners have a male & female and nature took its course. I believe they are in the process of having them 'fixed' now.

His name was decided long before I saw him - it's another singer though - Iggy after Iggy Pop - yup, he's Iggy Pup (for now).

OMG, what gorgeous pictures. He is stunning, but so is your other dog. What a lovely doggy family you have.

not too far. a young dog like that you'd be better off letting him run off the lead for 20 mins or so, in a park or football pitch.

Yup, they are real head-turners both of them. At a time where there are over 15000 unwanted dogs destroyed here each year, I really can't understand how anyone would go to a breeder to get a dog - it certainly isn't down to aesthetics.

Both came through Celtic Animal Life Line - the two ladies there do such a professional job and in my opinion are the real heroes here.

Looking forward to meeting the new addition down in the park, Jake will be delighted :D

They'll have a mad time the three of them. Jake is so mellow too he's a great socialisation introduction for Iggy.

Jake wouldn't be a 3-legged brindle, by any chance???

Glad you gave him a home and try keep him in open spaces but try drive him to a field and let him run free. They love dragging their noses and until he gets a few shots best be safe. Wonderful pets;)

Nope, just your normal run of the mill 4-legged brindle. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=58342986&postcount=688

Although he does come close to being a no-legged one when the wife catches him sprawled on the couch ;)
