Using MPeg4 with iDVD & iMovie

I'm a complete novice with everything photos and movies so please forgive the ignorance....

I have a fairly basic digital camera that records video clips in MPeg4 format. I am looking to edit these using iDVD and iMovie on my mac but it doesn't seem to recognise these file types.

Any advice? Is this an insurmountable problem or is there a quick fix?

This might sound a bit arseways but you need to.......

    1) Transfer the MP4 file from your camera onto your Mac.

    2) Drag the file from your drive/desktop (or wherever you have it saved) onto IPHOTO

    3) Save the MP4 in Iphoto as a name you can easily find/remember.

    4) Open up IMOVIE, on the tool bar go....FILE - IMPORT MOVIE.

    5) A new window will open, find your MP4 file within IPHOTO and import it to Imovie.

    6) In Imovie, go to bottom panel and press "Last Import"

TA....DA....There's your MP4 file for you to edit away on Imovie.
