Is it possible to have internet on an unlocked iPhone 3G when I am on Vodafone 'Pay as You Go'? If it is, how do I go about doing it? Thanks.

    I don't understand your question.

Are you asking of Vodafone provide a 3G service on PAYG?

    Yeah, exactly?

Well, after an extensive search of the vodafone.ie webstite, I came across this:

Hang on, it's a lot more complicated than that.

An unlocked iPhone cannot, without further modification, access the Vodafone Live portal which is what the quoted prices are for. It can only access isp.vodafone.ie which charges €0.19 per MB of traffic with no €0.99 daily ceiling.

In order to use Vodafone Live and avail of the cheaper rates, you apparently need to download the TZones Hack and replace the proxy.pac file in /var/preferences on the phone. I say "apparently" because I haven't been able to get it to work. Even then you only have service limited to a couple of ports.

So using an iPhone on Vodafone, assuming you can get it to work, involves either greater expense or greater limitation.

How come this is the case? Is it not a matter of just entering the conneciton details?

Great. I might have to consider switching to O2 if that's the case.

I believe you need the appropriate proxy settings loaded into the proxy.pac file as well as a change to some other preferences. But someone like coadyj will have a better idea.

I can confirm, however, that just entering the APN details doesn't work.

No it's not. Why? Exclusivity contracts. Apple have made it this difficult on purpose.

But surely exclusivity contracts are out the Window when you unlock an iphone?

Not really, You're not supposed to be able to unlock it in the first place.

You can change the APN settings in the network section of the general settings.

Yes, you can. And if you change it to live.vodafone.ie with User and Password set to "dublin" you will find that it doesn't work. You need a workaround.

So is there a final answer as to what the APN settings should be? isp.vodafone.ie or live.vodafone.ie and which username and password? Thanks.

    So,
    APN: live.vodafone.com
    Username: dublin
    Password: dublin

if you want to use live on the iPhone it's not as simple as that. As was said on the previous page you need to enter the proxy details in a file called proxy.pac. I never looked into it much myself but the instructions were given on this forum at some stage. Try searching for proxy.pac

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

if you don't want to go to all that hassle you can use isp.vodafone.ie with username and password as vodafone because it doesn't need a proxy.

The differences between it and live are more things work on isp because live has some ports blocked and some other drawbacks and isp costs 19c per mb where live is capped at 99c per day. Those prices are for pre pay, i can't remember now if it's the same on bill but i'll look it up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

isp.vodafone.ie isn't 19c per mb on bill pay, it's 2c per kb but you can buy an add on to bring the price down.

on both pre pay and bill, live is 2c per kb up to 99c and then capped until you reach 50mb, then it goes back to 2c per kb. but again, on bill pay you can buy an add on

    Got this text from Vodafone today (wonder if they checked who is using an iPhone);
Got and iPhone? Connect to the internet on the go for 19c per MB with Vodafone's ISP rate. See http://www.vodafone.ie/vlive/internetmobile/iphone

I followed the directions on the site (APN: isp.vodafone.ie, username/password: vodafone) but it doesn't seem to work

Do you get an error message?

  • Registered Users Posts: 163 ✭✭menuisier

ive tried editing the proxy file information using info from the two below sources with no luck

    http://www-boris.blogspot.com/2008/05/how-to-setup-iphone-for-vodafine-live.html

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=55210443

so is anyone using the vodafone live portal on a prepay iphone at the moment?

This worked ok for me just now on a 2G iPhone, maybe try it again? Expensive though, be warned!

So is it possible or not to use the live apn with an iphone, even after doing some editing of proxy.pac/etc?

The mobile internet page on vodafone.ie lists wap.vodafone.ie as an older option for the same 99c a day, does this work? (even though it'd be insanely slow im guessing)
    Thanks
